[STOP Virgin] From Destroying the Internet!

Thread Starter

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it's news, so w/e.

This article discusses NET NEUTRALITY.

Quote:
The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks†and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.

This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.

Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.

But we can stop it.

If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.

Speak out in any way you can and spread the word.

Wow, looks like you guys in the UK are pretty screwed. Makes comcast look good by comparison. Not to mention comcast has already reversed their filtering and is trying to draft a P2P bill of rights. too little to late though, I am getting verizon fios as soon as it is available in my area.

To sum it up, basically the UK provider in question is trying to make it so that select websites load much faster than other ones (by increasing speed of the paying sites, AND decreasing the speed of nonpaying sites), based on how much the websites pay them.

1) It won't just affect the UK. If they go through with it without any negative repercussions, it will send a message to other ISPs that its ok to do.

2) Comcast's so called "bill of rights" is not anything that benefits the consumer. It basically outlines what they have the right to do regarding filtering and the like. They're still a god awful company.

Yeh, but they would only bother with the really big sites (youtube, myspace, facebook, etc in the UK) imo, i doubt sites like OCN would be affected... (I'm not saying it's not big though..)

Those of you that support "net neutrality" don't really know what you are supporting. Its sort of one of those misnomers, sort of like "managed free trade".

I do not support net neutrality and that doesn't mean I like the idea of content limited internet. That means I support the market deciding how the internet should run.
