file server

Thread Starter
I am pretty much a noob at website development and I am completely unfamiliar with the different server technologies, by basic goal is to create a secure file server that I can access either through the web or through a ftp client. Right now my website is hosted free but I do have experience setting up a home server and because I would not like to have adds on my site, I will end up hosting my site from home. The only concern I had last time I set up the home server (linux) is that my www.domain.com would not link to my external ip address, but that should not take much to figure out. If anyone has any ideas or links to good tutiorials, that would be GREAT(+rep)!

Well if you used something like godaddy for your domain the you go to the total DNS control panel and set your domain to be directed to your ip. To find your ip you login to your router and view the status. Your ip will be listed there. finally you need to foward any ports to your webserver. For example you would foward port 80 for webtraffic to your server. ftp is 21 and so on. Or you can enable DMZ which will forward all traffic to your server but this is not very secure.

if I set up DMZ to forward all ports (aka just give it my external ip address), would having a software firewall on the linux web server be enough to keep it secure?

Also I have another question, if I were to forget the file server idea, how easy would it be to implement and/or create a basic proxy server to be hosted from my house? Would it be against the tos of my isp?

Port forwarding plus this tutorial should do it.

FTP is what you need.
