That's what I was thinking. Question though... what exactly does the current 9 series (including the 9600) have over the 8800 series, performance wise? I mean, if specs like memory bandwidth, # of stream processors, core/mem/shader frequencies are the same - what other attribute(s) (if anything) can or does make the 9 series any better? Because as far as I know, with the 9800GTX being a 8800GTS G92 with a slightly different core revision, I'm thinking the differences are almost nothing. Any ideas?

From what I understand they are pretty much the same card. There may be some slight differences in the core (like steppings on a cpu)and PCB layout but not enough to claim that the card is in a different series.

The 9600GT is just under the 8800GT in performance. It's a newer core design, so it is able to get away with fewer shaders and still perform nearly as well. The 9800GTX is just a highly clocked G92, but it just can't hold up to the 8800Ultra's memory bandwidth - which is why that card was such a disappointment.

Actually, the 9800GTX is close to the Ultra, and will overclock past it as well as the G92 GTS.

I believe the 8800Ultra can also be overclocked.

True, but it's close to its limits since it is an 8800GTX overclocked. A lot of 8800GTX's will overclock to the same limits as the Ultra will. The 9800GTX has been shown to have a lot of headroom. The overclock like beasts

This is simply not true. At least not for the most part. I've heard this argument, and it has largely been laid to rest. Most 8800GTX's, even factory overclocked ones, cannot surpass 8800Ultra clocks by much. And they definitely cannot surpass 8800Ultra after overclocking. The stock 8800Ultra core of 612MHz speed (reference design, not factory OC'd) can usually be matched by most 8800GTX's, but not surpassed by much. The 2160MHz memory frequency of the Ultra is widely unattainable by most 8800GTX's unless volt-modded. The 8800Ultra is not an 8800GTX. The core and memory are the same "revision", yes. But they are "binned" differently and can attain different final frequencies, which has been shown by reviews and posts here at OCN and other forums.

But really, that is insignificant to my original point. The 9800GTX can be overclocked to match the 8800Ultra in some benchmarks, sure. But the 8800Ultra can be overclocked as well. What the 8800GTX can do is beside the point, and doesn't invalidate that point.

That link in my first post shows the 9800GTX a few frames under the Ultra at stock. The 9800GTX has a lot more headroom than the 8800Ultra, so I beg to differ. Take a look at those averages.

What do the average FPS results have to do with overclocking? And how does that show the 8800Ultra cannot overclock well?

Point is if they're close at stock for averages of several games, and it's known that the 9800GTX overclocks like a beast and that the Ultra, yea it overclocks, but nothing spectacular. People are getting 20% oc's for stable usage. I don't think the Ultra can keep up with that.
