Windows Fails Me?

Thread Starter
I've tried at least 10 operating systems (literally 10+) with my new Mobo\\CPU\\Hard drive, and all have either ended up in 0x(0x6)24 [bad NTFS system IIRC] or an unstable operating system. None of the legal Windows setups have worked on the Quick format or slow format, though a few have almost made it. I believe I have gotten 3 OS to successfully install, but they all ran un-stable, with constant crashing of programs or inability to install programs because they were "corrupt".

I've been concluding that the operating systems I have been trying were bad since they were "impure" (trying to avoid talking about piracy here). But, now after trying 3 legal operating systems XP Home, XP Home SP2, and XP Pro SP2, and they have all now also failed, I've been wondering if it's probably my new hard drive that's the problem. It's a Seagate 250G - 16MB, not that it really matters though. Is the problem likely a bad hard drive, or a motherboard problem?

Uhh yeah I'd say either HDD or SATA controller on your mobo.

As for the OP - If you've tried that many different operating systems and they all end up with the same result it leads me to believe there is something wrong with your hard drive. Maybe you could get an old hard drive from a friend or colleague to test it with?

You may want to download a hard drive testing software to see if there is anything physically wrong with the drive.

Download Seatools since it's a seagate.

I do not have any other computers that have Sata ports, but I may be able to go to my friends house and test it real quick.

I have another hard drive, but it already has an OS on it from my old computer, and I don't want to corrupt it by uninstalling\
einstalling chipset drivers. How safe is uninstalling\
einstalling chipset drivers?

Thanks for the Seagate tool, I should have thought of that before, but I never suspected the HDD.

Edit: I just realized I can run the Seagate test without an OS, so I'll get right on that, if this install fails.

Edit:
Seagate test returned "Invalid Opcode at B47B 8179 3017 (0000 x10)"<- ex: 0000 0000 ....
Removing the suspected "problem drive" and booting off my other drive (configured for the M2N32-SLI) I received error messages 0xC2 and 0x7E. It could actually be the motherboard, but I hope it isn't... I'm trying to test the HDD, but I'm having a hard time. Safe mode didn't even work on my original hard drive, so it may be the Sata controller on the DFI.

Edit: Very wide range of errors... A few times it booted into windows then crashed a few seconds after with an error and BSOD "system_service_exception" 0x0000003B - 0x00000000c0000005

Once I received "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" 0x50 - 0x5 - 0x0 - 0xFFFFFa8200B7BD98 - 0xFFFFFADFC833DEAB - 0xFFFFFa8200B7BD98 base at 0xFFFFFADFC833DEAB \\ Datestamp45D690EF

I've also received 0x7E - 0xFFFFFFFFC0000005 - 0xFFFFFADFC9078350 - 0xFFFFFADFC9078940

I still believe it is the HDD, and that this HDD isn't working due to the old drivers conflicting with the new motherboard. Is there any obvious signs that the SATA controller is the problem?

Note that I have booted in windows a few times on the suspected bad hard drive (a few versions actually installed), but it was very unstable. It could be bad sectors or a bad controller...

I need some help here. Can anyone help me determine whether it's my HDD or MoBo? I only have a few weeks to RMA, and if I get a new HDD and the problems my Mobo, I may have to be out of quite a bit of money.

There is nothing I can really think of to test the motherboard itself. Usually the mobo is the suspect when you've replaced absolutely everything and it's still not working. try your hard drive in your friend's computer like you said you would a few hours ago, and see if it works there. if it does, then bingo, it's the mobo. if it doesn't work there, it could still be both. always hard to tell when the mobo might be the problem.
