As for getting your stuff back, the best scenario I can think of is if the police catch the guy breaking into another car, match fingerprints, then hopefully your stuff is still around with the crook.
No its absolutely not his fault its the fault of the POS who steal from PRODUCTIVE members of society. How in todays world can we assign any fault to a victim. We shouldn't have to lock doors, just because people are greedy and opportunistic...grrrr walking away.
EDIT: I am not meaning to pick specifically on you, its just I hear that all the time. He is not at fault, locked or not locked taking those items is wrong and as such he isn't wrong, niave maybe but not at fault.
