Help Replacing Athlon

Thread Starter
I have an HP a1483w with a ASUS A8N-LA Motherboard.
It has an X2 Athlon 4200+ 2.2 ghz processor. I have an hd 3850 that is bottlenecked by my processor. Even old games like bf2 lag horribly on this machine. Is it possible to get a faster athlon processor with this mobo? Would it be a waste of money with no overclocking ability? I am looking at this one on newegg

Will it work in my machine?

It should, as long as it has the same FSB on the CPU.

You may have to do a BIOS update as well, but I am unsure on that.

I would say go with at least a 5600+ or higher. I got the best performance once I hit 2.8 and up.

Thanks for the replies. :-) I don't think asus even acknowledges that they ever produced this mobo. I am pretty sure there has been no updated bios since '06. Is there any way at all to overclock what I have? I dread spending $150 to stop stuttering and lagging in BF2.

Always I broke down and bought a 6000+. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773
Damn I hope it works with my mobo. I am pretty sure hp has released no bios updates since 2006. Is that going to be a problem?
