Q6600 or Q6700?

Thread Starter
Since the prices of the Q6700 has dropped would it be a good idea to get one? How do they oc? Is it really worth $60 more. What is the potential of this chip? I would be using an EVGA 750i FTW motherboard, OCZ SLI 2x2gb DDR2 800, 2x8800gt, and Tuniq Tower. I know that this thing has a sweet spot of 3.6 and a 10x multi which will be less stressful on the mb.

i'd say theres more like a $100 difference in prices. A q6600 can be easily found for $200 or less.

Depend on whether you feel the 10x multiplier is worth the extra money. I don't know about the 750i. I don't think it will have a FSB wall before 400MHz, so you should be fine.

Idk, I would guess that this chip made the cut (pun intended) for a Q6700, I would venture that it is a better OC'er than a Q6600.

Maybe not in terms of percentage, but you probably will get higher clocks.

Now that they cut the price, I'm thinking about getting one...maybe I can trade my E8400 plus some cash for one...

Considering the Q6700 is only $259 at Tiger Direct, I would definitely go for it. The Q6700 is a higher binned chip then the Q6600. That means it is selected as a superior chip to a Q6600 at Intel's fabrication plant and has the potentail to overclock higher.

Like I said in another thread, there is absolutly no way the 67 is worth even 10$ extra!! They are the same exact core with the same overclockability. Just like the old A64 3000+ - 3800+ (Venice) they all could hit 2.8-3.0. So if you're an overclocker you are able to get the same performance for less.

Q6600 FTW!!!

Edit: To post above me: They are hand picked, but they aren't going to OC much better if any that a GO 6600, if you can find me some proof of the 6700 OCing better than a q6600 GO, Ill admit defeat.

not worth 60 bucks IMO...a 9x multiplier is sufficient if you have a good enough motherboard, but I can't say that I know enough about your setup to know that you would be okay. Even if you could only get 400fsb, 3.6G is probably going to be your limit anyway.

I don't know anything about the 750i's, but i know that their 650i counterparts (like my board) are TERRIBLE QUAD OVERCLOCKERS...make sure that the 750's are good quad oc'ers before you make the jump to intel.

For those who use Frys.com the Q6600 is back fro $179.99 making it a much better deal of OC per $ than the Q6700.
