Which Router for Wireless MS adapter?

Thread Starter
Ok so my buddy is going to buy all the stuff next week to hook up live and i have no idea which router would be the best for a wireless connection. i have a Dlink router and i use a wired connection. one question is what should i get him a wireless G or G+ with speedboost or MIMO? because the MS adapter says G not G+ or anything. the reason is because its a $10 difference between the G and G speedboost. thx guys

speed boost only works if your wireless adapter has speedboost. I have the dlink WBR 2310 and it works with no problems on wireless G mode with the 360

Get a Linksys WRT54G. Install DD-WRT on it and BAM. Possibly one of the best routers around for all the features you get. You can also "overclock" the wireless (aka boost the mV on the addaptor) to get bigger range if it doesn't reach.

I have the WBR-2310 and the WRT54G. Definatly the WRT54G over the WBR-2310. The earlier firmwares had many many many problems uncluding dropping connections every 10-15 seconds but it seems to be corrected since 1.04 but some people still have those problems...

Much safer bet with the WRT54G + DD-WRT.

me too but I know people who have....

They have now updated to 1.05 but the problem still resides... I think its something to do with actual hardware problems but D-Link wont admint to that...

DD-WRT is a custom firmware that lets you customize pretty much EVERYTHING you can think of doing with a router.

DD-WRT

It will depend on the version that you get. Chances are you will get a V8.0.

How to Flash the WRT54G v8.0

All of those "speed boost" technologies are proprietary and only work with devices that use the exact same proprietary technology. So if you get a D-Link w/ SpeedBoost, you still can't use SpeedBoost with your X360 if you're using Microsoft's wireless adaptor. (In fact, when the MS adaptor is turned on, the entire network will slow down to standard 802.11g speeds.) Now if you plug the X360 into a D-Link bridge that supports SpeedBoost, then you could use SpeedBoost, since all wireless gear would be using the same tech.

But you don't need SpeedBoost anyway. I've been using a D-Link WRT54G for years, and SpeedBoost was such a pain in the butt (dropped connections to my old Xbox left and right) that I just turned it off. Never had a problem since, and standard G speeds are plenty fast enough for online gaming (done it with Halo 3 a little and Rock Band many, many times). Edit - I use a D-Link bridge by the way, not the MS wireless adaptor.

No, a wireless bridge is a little device that connects to your wireless network, but has an ethernet port for you to plug a wired device into. It's a way to add wireless connectivity to any ethernet capable device, basically does the same thing as USB WiFi like the MS wireless adaptor, but it uses an ethernet port instead of a USB port.

This looks like the modern version of the one I have, but I don't see mine on D-Link's site anymore...too old, I guess.
