9800 GX2 8 pin connector PLZ help!

Thread Starter
I just purchased an evga 9800gx2. My power supply has one 8 pin connector but that is being used up by my mobo..

I have two six pin connectors.. Can I use one of the six pins on the eight pin? I'm kind of pissed cause the 8 pin adapters they sent with the card are pretty much worthless (no 8 to 6!) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, you cannot. The 9800GX2 requires one 8 and one 6 pin. Two 6 pins will not work. Period.

The only thing you could do is buy a 6 to 8 pin connector, or a new PSU.

Can someone please link me to a 6-8 pin connector?

Never ever ever mix up 8-pin CPU power cables and 8-pin PCIe power cables. They are completely different.

The extra 2 pins in a 8-pin PCIe cable are just ground. So, plug the 6-pin cable in, find some spare wire, and connect the 2 spare pins to any black wires, as all black wires are ground. Will save you a bit of money, and time waiting for the adapter to arrive.

EDIT: Make sure the wires you use are at least as thick as those in the power cables. If the wires are too thin, they may melt.

Ya, I don't feel comfortable doing that. Can someone link me to an adapter? Thanks.

For other cards with this kind of 6 and 8 pin setup, 2x6 pins works just fine...maybe the 9800GX2 is different, but I doubt it. I would just buy the adapter to be safe.

Okay, let me correct you guys.

You cannot use two 6 pin connectors on the 9800GX2, one will light up green and the other will light up red (The lights in the 9800GX2.) and nothing will appear on screen. Everyone who has tried to use two 6 pin connectors has failed. It simply will not work.

And while it is true, the extra two pins in a 8 pin connector are only for ground, they still have more voltage coming out of a 8 pin connector.

I fried a 9800GX2 by putting an 8-pin motherboard connector in it. Don't make that mistake.

Some of the guys here may remember that thread.

I got my adapter from Frozen-CPU. it was costly, but worth it.
