A lot of misinformation in this thread.... so let me clear it up.

The standard 6-pin PCIe plug consists of 3 +12v and 3 GND wires. It allows up to 75w per plug. The 8-pin PCIe plug consists of 4 +12v and 4 GND wires. It allows up to 150w per plug. The 8 pin plug is not just two more grounds... that would be completely pointless since its not reducing wire resistance.

Now, is 6-pin to 8-pin adapter safe? Yes. Why? Because the video card will never draw that much power to matter. It is there for leeway and to reduce voltage drop on the lines.

The 9800GX2 draws over 200w, right? Two 6-pin and the slot would be able to provide 225w power safely. The card does not truly need 300w.


The motherboard AUX/EPS plug is identical to the 8-pin PCIe plug in terms of wiring. It is 4 +12v and 4 GND. However, usually it is keyed different and generally will not fit into the PCIe plug (but some users have been able to do so).
