Good HTPC?

Thread Starter
I'm building a HTPC for video encoding, etc. I don't know anything about them but I think I have a decent performing build right now:

Lite-On DVD Burner
WD 80GB SATA HDD
Cheap AM2 MB (No OCing)
Sapphire 2400Pro (should be good for video encoding)
Super Talent Media Reader (for digital camera chips)
Sempron 2100 Brisbane (should be decent to web browse while encoding)
1GB Dual Channel w/HeatSinks
and HTPC Case w/270W PSU

I won't be gaming on this, just encoding videos and watching videos, using it as a main personal pc (no games), and storage for all my music and pictures. I think this will be find, I'll add a TV Tuner so I can watch TV on it too but are they worth it?

looks pretty good for a HTPC. good choice on the card too. ATI is better for movies and such.

Check the 780G chipset: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D+Motherboards

It is basically a 2400 Pro onboard. I would recommend this over the mobo+GPU to save power and cooling.

For only $3 more get the X2 4000 and under clock it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103774

So this would be perfectly fine for encoding videos, etc. Do you think I could save money by going with a Single-Core?

So it will encode videos like a regular 2400Pro?

Edit: The MB + GPU combo I chose would have turned out to be $40 after MIR and the one you recommended is $80 and doesn't have a rebate.

True, but it will be noticeable cooler and use less energy. If it is going into a tight case.... get the motherboard. I have HTPC being cooled by just a 700RPM 80mm and the HSF's 700RPM 92mm fan. It's silent! If you have a bigger case, then you can afford better cooling then.

Ok then I'm wondering will it encode as good a 2400Pro?

Edit: Dude I just went to here and watched the video and dude I have never heard of Integrated GPU working with the Dedicated, then the Dedicated getting shut down when not needed.

Thats the Hybrid Crossfire you are talking about?
Its new.

Personally, i would go for one of the 45W CPUs. Something like the BE-2350 (2.1Ghz) or X2 4450/4850 (2.3Ghz/2.5Ghz). This will make the machine even cooler.

I used to run a HD2400Pro and had problems with it, upgraded to a HD2400XT and that fixed it all. Plus the 2400Pros do not come wiht the DVI->HDMI adapter, the XTs do.

I will probably be upgrading both my HTPCs to a X2 4850e and NVIDIA 8200/8300 motherboard soonish

What OS are you planning on running??? If its Vista, make sure you get at-least 2GB of RAM!

I don't think Hybrid Crossfire supports shutting down the card (yet). It only works in Vista and it combines the onboard with the discrete in Crossfire. You can only use this feature with a few low-end discrete cards though.

Well I would use it with a 3450, just incase I get the urge to play a game (yes I know at low settings) then I would be able to play it. As for the 80GB HDD it will be enough for me because I don't even use up 40GB on my 100GB Laptop HDD. I think I'm going to go with Vista but I was wondering does Ubuntu work fine as a media center machine. It will save me money from buying Vista, and I can get 1GB RAM. Is the only advantage the fact that it doesn't have a Media Remote?
