R12 was what was in cars up until like 93 or 95 it was great but horrid to the enviroment, it has been banned for sale for many many years except to certified people, and even then its like $1500 for a 30 or 40 pound can. I have some old cans for home use that I got from my uncle long ago. I still have a few cars that run on it. I know when they switched over to the new stuff(R-134A) it required the compressor to spin 70% faster to get the same cooling as the older R12. I know R22 is used in homes and refrigerators and stuff. I don't know whats better R22(home coolant) or R12(old car coolant).

BTW any tips for keeping an ancient a/c unit for my house running?

to keep a unit in good shape is hard. some times it will loose pressure and you have to call a service tech in (me LOL) and they will recharge it. or other times since the water that comes off the coil itslef has acid in it it will eat at the copper and put small holes in it( thats why trane is going to aluminum fins and pipes. they oxidize and protect them selves from that) and kill the unit that way. other times it will just be the thermostat that has gone bad and needs to be replaced (bout 80 bucks) so really you cant keep up keep on a old AC unit.

How exactly does the cooling work? It obviously isn't the traditional "air conditioning" one would think of (using freon and a compressor), because that would just emit more heat (being the unit is inside the case). How does the "air conditioner" in this case actually cool? Just curious.

According to one of the reviewers, this isn't actually an AC (as in "traditional" ACs), but a TEC. The extra heat from the hot side of the peltier is exhausted from the bottom of the case.

I thought of doing this awhile ago but came up with the idea of mounting an air conditioning system within a plexiglass box that would fit around my case. Just have to make sure that it doesn't put out humidity. Was a nice idea but never got the follow through to finish it. I did hook up a mini air conditioner near my pc and it worked wonderful even just being in the open. So great case...would be a good thing.

Or some Oxen. Just make sure you don't die from Typhoid or Cholera. And bring enough pounds of food!

So do u think u would be able to modify the power going to the plate to yield even more temp reduction?

I almost bought the cpu heatsink that does the same thing

And if you complain about fan noise, just wait until you try and mod a AC unit for your computer LOL
