Computer Hard Locking... input appreciated

Thread Starter
Running exactly what my sig says on the 8.4 catalyts drivers. My computer hard locks at random intervals. Gaming can go for hours then lock. Other times I'll restart and within 5 min and not opening a single program the system will lock.

What I have tried so far:
8.2 / 8.3 and 8.4 ati drivers all same prob
Turned every back to stock speeds and still does it.
Tried reformatting about 3 times and every time I installed the video drivers to a different version.

All temps look well with in normal on Everest.
Haven't tried to see if it locks up in safe mode.
Haven't tried a different video card yet.

Anyone with a similar problem and/or solution?

1. Try booting in safe mode
2. Try a different video card
3. Test and RMA motherboard.

i say it a ram or dirver problem (slight chance psu)
If it was a RAM problem it *probably* wouldn't boot. And it would probably just crash or BSOD instead of hard locking. Nevertheless, i guess he could try running memtest86

I had a 3870x2 with my DFI X38, and I must say these two hardware do not like eachother, I would get lockups in steam by going to "My Games" or even surfing the internet for awhile. I would update your bios and see if that helps.

It was these reasons why I sold my 3870X2, I bet you throw in a different card you wont have any issues.

EDIT: Even another member here had issues with the 3870X2 and his DFI X48, He was on Vista and SP1 solved most of his lockups.

I did run two passes of memtest and it came out just fine. Since I already have SP1 intalled all up to date drivers only thing left is a hradware incompatability or a bios update. I updated mine when I first bought the the mobo but havent looked since on DFI's site. About 3-4 weeks ago. I'll have to take a look or maybe look at rolling back to an older bios. Thanks for the input so far.

And as far as OCing goes getting 470fsb stable was nearly impossible. Lowered CPU multi to 6x and made sure the ram could handle the 1:1 MHz. Upped the NB voltage and messed with the GTL ref voltage and nothing would work. Maybe I really do have a defunked board.

Its really strange too because sometimes I can run prime 95 all night long but try to do a net speed test on speedtest.com and almost instant lockup as the page loads. Very frustrating to troubleshoot.

Rolandooo you a R1 rider? I have a 2003 myself. :-) Saw your avatar and system name. Attachment 71367

And I hope it doesnt come to having to sell a perfectly good card due to a "glitch" between it and the mobo. I think I would have to wait till the 4870XT comes out and see how they perform first. On top of that I dont have the +rep to sell anything on here yet :-(

And yeah SP1 cleared up the random freezes, except for Steam.

Anyone else notice that DFI's site seems to always be down? Make getting a newer bios kinda difficult eh?
