Yeah there are really like 5 types of 8800GTS

8800GTS: 320mb, 320-bit bus, 96 shader processors, 20 ROPs, 24 TMUs, G80 Core
8800GTS: 640mb, 320-bit bus, 96 shader processors, 20 ROPs, 24 TMUs, G80 Core
8800GTS: 640mb, 320-bit bus, 112 shader processors, 20 ROPs, 24 TMUs, G80 Core
8800GTS: 512mb, 256-bit bus, 128 shader processors, 16 ROPs, 64 TMUs G92 Core
8800GTS: 1024mb, 256-bit bus, 128 shader processors, 16 ROPs, 64 TMUs, G92 Core

I highly doubt that they will send you a G92 GTS. They will most likely return the same card you sent in.

Bottom line, the g92 GTS's are faster in *almost all* cases because:
1) Their texture compression routines are better optimized,
2) They are clocked stock at higher speeds, and they overclock considerably further,
3) They have more stream processors (aka 'shaders')

These come into play more frequently as limiting factors to performance than the ROP count. The memory bandwidth ends up being a non-factor as well because the additional memory clock speed on the g92 ends up compensating for the advantage of the 320-bit bus width on the G80's.

This being said, if I had an 8800GTS640, I wouldn't be sweating the issue of an upgrade to anything that's out right now. I'd just overclock it to the max and wait until the next generation, myself. It's not like they're slow cards, they're actually still very nice relative to what's out there now.

If its not broke, and you want to upgrade, sell it and buy a G92 or whatever. But don't rma a perfectly good card in the hopes that they screw up and send you a better one. It just delays other customers' legitamite RMA's.

And its dishonest.

Yeah.. you are totally right..

But that does not always stop people from trying that crap... Alot of people are way too cheap for their own good, and also uninformed.
