[INQ] Earthworm Jim slithers back onto screens

AN ENTIRE GENERATION of gamers has grown up with the bizarre antics of Earthworm Jim etched into their brain, as keyboard were hammered and gamepads cursed in a bid to avoid falling cows, lava pits, and the snapping of the poor chap's slimy neck.

They can rejoice, for the revival of Interplay has brought with it the announcement of a new game in the Earthworm Jim series. No word yet on platforms - although we can probably expect DS and PSP to be dead certs - as well as the improbable continuation of the cartoon series and even a brand new movie.

The cartoon series ran on American network The WB for a couple of years, but no word on who will be picking it up this time. The man who created Earthworm Jim, Douglas TenNapel, is back on hand as creative consultant - after spending the better part of a decade moaning about how Interplay screwed him over on royalties. Presumably that's all sorted, then.

Interplay is also aiming to garner up some hot new action through its brand library by reviving MDK and Descent, too, but no news on those yet.

I'm sure quite a few people on here have never heard of or seen Jim, but I remember him on the Megadrive and my 486, hilarious game (and cartoon series). Could be a great new game.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! OK a lil bit offtopic here but!

DOESN'T INTERPLAY OWN THE RIGHTS TO FREESPACE?! AND INTERPLAY IS COMING BACK...

OH MY FREAKING W00T THERE IS HOPE FOR FREESPACE 3!

*note* sry for mostly caps typing. I really am that excited, I Loved, yes Loved, w/ a cap L(lol), Freespace and Freespace 2. Also. I never played earthworm jim... lol.

OH! and the Descent games we're pretty 1337 too.

I hope they decide to work together w/ Volition/THQ on these

I loved Earthworm Jim. He had a potential to be bigger than Mario or Sonic. He was a funny character with funny villians and clever writing. It's too bad that the company that owned him didn't know how to maximize his popularity.

The same could be said for Toejam and Earl.

Oh yeah.... forgot to mention that too

I'd pre-order another Descent & Freespace right now if I could! Anyone else notice how the Alien ship bit of Crysis was like Descent.

I sure hope they make an EWJ game for Wii. The SNES/Genesis games were brilliant. For some reason, I've always been especially fond of the Genesis version in particular.

Actually FREESPACE has been released under GPL. It's had several overhauls since being released, and it just keeps looking better and better while running great on four year old computers.

Beyond the Red Line is the best Battlestar Galactica game ever, and it is an entirely open source fan made project available for Windows and Linux- I know I have it on both of my machines.

A lot of classic game series are being revived now (Earthworm Jim, Bionic Commando, Spatterhouse, etc.) but sadly I doubt any of them will return to their former glory
