server raid question

ok right my dad is a photographer he has just brought a apple xserver quad core ect 8gb ddr2 mem 2x 1tb harddriver 1x 80gb hard driver.

now he needs a raid system we have looked at the apple xraid but that is very old now.

we want a quick system to view the images very quickly.

we have found 3 raid drives that would be good i would just no what one would be the best

OK here's a few ideas

http://www.CalDigit.com/HDOne/ - This company is getting rave write ups and produce VERY fast systems, not sure on UK supplier but will look into it.

http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-5pm/ - This companies stuff is really solid, I used to use their 2-disk system for recording and was nice and fast/stable, this particular drive would use the software raid of OS X.

http://store1.sonnettech.com/product...roducts_id=219 - This one would work similar to the firmtek using os x raid, once again gets loads of awards, reliable etc.

You're looking to spend $600 just for an external RAID solution (excluding hard drives)

You could basically build your own dataserver (yes computer) with that money, and network it with the Apply.

I don't know too much about external RAID solutions, but it seems a bit expensive to me.

Ok, got it. (although I don't understand the 'non-PC' part).

I won't get the ones that rely on the OS software RAID... I don't feel comfortable just when I hear that. Any RAID that's so critical should be pure hardware based RAID.

Even though it's by far the most expensive, the HDOne looks like a great device. RAID5 (out of the box) or RAID6 are the preferred RAID options of course.

Even if you want a dedicated RAID server it has to be OS X? Why?

What I mean is...
Main computer: MAC for the photo/video editing.

Dedicated computer (meaning a SECOND computer) as a dataserver. This can be a linux box networked with the MAC. All you'll need is a good case, a cheap CPU like an E2160, 4GB RAM (cheap currently), a nice mobo with onboard RAM (Intel G31 chipset will do - inexpensive), a RAID controller card (one that can handle four SATA II drives costs about $300), and hard drives of course.

However, since this will be a box you build yourself, you won't have any support for the whole system, just for the individual parts. In hindsight, since it's for a business, I might indeed lean toward the solution you initially proposed, and in that case, I'd seriously go for the HDOne. You don't want ANYTHING that uses software RAID, since that'll cost you CPU power....

Chozart, I think he needs a eSATA or internal RAID since " quick system to view the images very quickly." Any networked RAID would be slower due to Ethernet overhead.
Once again...
