Just because the interface is 256bit, doesn't mean it can't utilize more than 512MB of RAM, that's absolutely ludicrous. If it was true, then you could only have 128MB sticks of RAM. If you want to find out the bandwidth, just take the bus width, divide by 8, multiply by effect speed, and that's the bandwidth in GBps.

(256/8) * 3.8 = 121.6

Nice link! Seriously though, I didn't say it was true (nor did I say I believed it); I said it is the general consensus, which it is. And why are you calculating the bandwidth of the memory? This is about the ability of a specific bus width to completely utilize a specific amount of memory, not the total memory bandwidth. Clearly there is some link between the two, as why would Nvidia do a relatively odd combination of 768MB and 384-bit bus?

I think, I'm just speculating but what I'm thinking makes perfect sense, with the 256bit interface, you can access 256bits at one time, with slow memory (GDDR3) it takes longer to move data from place to place. With GDDR5, since the memory speed is so much faster, you can have a smaller interface and not suffer from that latency. As far as the GTX goes, it uses slower GDDR3, it needs that 384bit interface so as not to slow down the card so much.

Thats not 100% right.

G9800GX2 has 2x 128 Units.
HD3870x2 has 2x (64 x 5) Shader units.
So it is 128 vs 64x5 in theory.
But nVidia and AMD using different ways here.

To say it in simple words:
The Units of a Radeon are grouped by 5 while only 1 of this 5 can do complex shader algorithms.
So the worst case is that there are only 64 units when the shader code is very complicated.
Or 320 when the shader code is simple.

It is more to the Driver to balance that out and make use of as much units as possible.
So a 3D Mark gets pretty good score as AMD already done the driver work duo it.
Games scale differently to a modern Radeon Card...

The 128 of a NV Card can do the hole Shader 4 needs.
So they are 128 ALUs in every situation.
With bad or good Driver.
