Idk what the specs are with no graphic card. His computer starts up and os is working well and fast. As soon as he tries to make the computer work at all ... ie. something as simple as dl myspace.com or run starcraft the computer shuts down.

Your going to have to be more specific, Your question would sound a lot like this to a cop..... I got Robbed in broad daylight and got a great view of the assailant, but I can't give you a description based on what I saw, he drove off in a car, and has my money......

Can you please try to be a tad more descriptive, we can't help with no system specs, get your friend to give us something if he needs the help.

my parents old AMD did something similar and there is a duct for the cpu with a filter and it was plugged causeing it to over heat. Not sure if you have a similar issue. If this is not the case run a good up to date virus scanner and a couple of spyware scanners

Good luck

sounds like an overheating or instability issue to me... do you have any way of cooling it more? Maybe check to see if the cooling fan is plugged in

Probably overheating after a little while. Does it not turn on for a while after it shuts down?

Try going to BIOS and sitting at the hardware monitoring screen and watch the CPU temp.

could a bad stick of ram also cause this to happen?

No, if it was a bad stick you'd get a BSOD or an error message would pop up. It's definitely the CPU being overheated.
