no matter what region the disc may be coded, the PS3 machine itself is coded region free. i dont see how they could lock it down even if they wanted to? i thought playback based on region coding was determined by the machine.

the 360 isn't always region locked. There are a few games for it that are international. But seeing as how the AU is getting a different version, it seems it would make sense to lock it. As for the PS3, Sony is gonna see this as a console mover, so I'm pretty sure Sony is gonna want to sell it in the AU and they probably release an update just for the AU market that only limits them to the AU version of the game.
Sounds like a lot of work right? But money is the motivating factor. MAke the game region locked and censored so you can have a few sales? Or make the game region free get a lot of sales but get sued or fined? But Sony is still in the red while making a profit, so when it comes to the Law, sony doesn't want to deal with. But they most likely will say it's the DEVS fault for not making a restricted version of it and not Sony's
