I got a FREE computer!!

Thread Starter
So to get to the point a friend gave me an old Celeron 2G Emachine that I don't think he ever actually used. Sweet says I! Never turn down free hardware.

The problem I have though is that when I boot windows is trying to initialize or something so it asked me what time zone I'm in and then asks me to name the computer so it can be identified on the network and that's as far as it goes. I fill it "NATE-2" as the name, hit next and then it just sits there and crunches for about 4 min. After 4 min the hd stops doing much of anthing and all the options on the screen (BACK, NEXT, SKIP) are greyed out so I can't select them.

Any options on how to fix this? I don't have the OEM windows disk that came with it but I do have an XP OEM disk laying around here. Could I simply format and reinstall windows with the Valid XP Sticker that's on the case? Thanks guys, hope to hear some ideas soon.

I would assume so, as long as the key hasn't been used too many times, in which case you may need to contact Microsoft for a new one.
I also support the linux comment. What was too time consuming for you?

I think the disk has to be from the same oem. Different OEM's have the disks configured for different codes.

actaully, you can use any OEM disc, as long as it say "OEM" on the install disc. All companies like dell, hp, compaq, emachines do is they bundle a few apps, config files, drivers, and they bypass the activation part of the install. As long as you are installing OEM and not Retail, it would work. (i've done the same. My dell OEM discs have gotten scratched beyond belief, causing errors when installing, so i get a "copy" of an OEM disc, and the key works since it's OEM.)

If the key on the OEM machine stays with the computer, then you're not in any violation of MS's TOS. (since the key stays with that machine, and doesn't change to a different machine)

Battista:
Linux was nice, I really did like it but I think it took me about 2 days of reading just to get my monitor recognized so I could use a res above 1024x768. Loading apps wasn't too bad but I was really hoping to get TF2 running on it, if I had been able to do that I would have probably stuck with it but with my limited knowlege of the linux "language" it was a real challenge for me and in the end wasn't worth the time it took to operate it on a daily basis.

Stumped:
Great! I'll try it when I get home from work, just didn't have time this morning.

Try Ubuntu.

I'm not that great with Linux and use Ubuntu. Ubuntu is very easy to use, so try it out.

I completely disagree with all of these people. Go find a performance version of windows (where... couldn't tell you ). Before you install it, change the CDKey out so its legit. Then install the drivers for your particular brand from the eMachines website -- they should have all the drivers you need. Id rather use Windows 3.1 than Linux, and Im sure you would too. YUCK
