Canonical Ltd. announced the upcoming availability of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition for free download on Thursday 24 April. In related news, Canonical also announced the simultaneous release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition.

With Ubuntu Desktop Edition you can surf the web, read email, create documents and spreadsheets, edit images and much more. Ubuntu has a fast and easy graphical installer right on the Desktop CD. On a typical computer the installation should take you less than 25 minutes.
3 year support for desktops, 5 years for server.

-Better hardware support
-MANY new server functions (Seriously, the best server OS I've used)
-Wubi Windows installer (install Ubuntu as a windows app)
-Tons of software for what you need to do

Whether you're new to Linux or you're a console pro, Ubuntu is an amazing, polished operating system. Just shows you what a billion dollars can do for an OS when it's utilized properly. (Mark Shuttleworth is rich) (wiki that if you still don't know what I'm talking about)

Honestly, to truly know how great Ubuntu's latest release is, head over to

http://ubuntu.com

and read up. It will be slow today because of the release, however. I really want to emphasize that though both of the releases (Desktop and Server) are great, the improvements on the server edition are magnificent.

Check the Server Edition features here.

I used Ubuntu back in the 5.xx days. It was among my first tries of Linux distros. I really hated it.

Since then, they have made exponential improvements with each release. It has become very polished off; I've been impressed. I look forward to trying it out (downloading right now).

Not sure about the complete list,
But what's been most anticipated is the support of the intel X3100 integrated graphics card.
It's what is found on most recent laptops, and it used to be quite some fuss to make it work with Feisty Fawn...
Now, apparently, it should work great. Downloading it now to test it with my own laptop...

Tons of hardware. Video support is less and less of an issue (in fact, dare I say no issue) in Ubuntu. Wifi driver support is growing with every release (Intel and Atheros wireless cards supported out of box, I think). The OS supports various technologies from both AMD and Intel. It also has battery life readings and power saving capabilities for laptop users.

It's an experimental thing right now, and for intermediate users, but you can encrypt your entire hard disk at install time when using the alternate install CD (find a guide).

Lots of Windows apps can run on Linux using WINE. UT2004(native linux), Blizzard and Steam-enabled games are among the most compatible.

I want to say one thing: I love Ubuntu, and it really is the most easy to use distro there is (IMO), but almost everything you can do in Ubuntu you an do in any Linux distro. Ubuntu just packages the features better.

Their Server Edition, though, is beyond compare. Beautiful.
