HTPC Parts

Thread Starter
Looking to get some parts for my HTPC build, looking to spend around $400 for mobo/cpu/ram/vid card. Going to be using it mainly for dvd/blu-ray playback and some games (COD4), also needs to have gigabit lan; which is pretty much a given these days.

Currently thinking:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...cture=Gigabyte - Gigabyte 780G Motherboard
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...anufacture=AMD - AMD 64 X2 5000+
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ture=G%2ESKILL
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...media%20Inc%2E - Palit 9600GT

That's about ~$435 not including shipping. Any thoughts?

What site can you buy from? ATX or mATX?

$70-100 780G Motherboard
$50 any X2
$30 2GB of any RAM

That's only $150ish. Add in a $50 PSU, $100 HD, $30 DVD Drive, and a case for under $400.
Once again...

Sorry, accidentally hit post on the first message without much information. Buying from any Canadian site. Don't need PSU, HDD, DVD or case. Just looking at CPU,RAM, video card to ease up on the CPU for HD processing. Also going to want to do a little gaming at decent resoltuion, just like COD4 so doesn't need to run Crysis well.

The 780G has integrated Ati HD 3200 graphics, which is why it's pretty much built for HTPC. So you won't need the 9600 too.

Any of the lower 8 series has decoders for HD media built in. If your going to be gaming, can you spring for a 9600?

Edit: Oops, I thought he was going to get an 8600, never mind.

For a little less you could get this intel build. Just keeping the balance. That BE is good if you're not overclocking though. The e2180 would keep up better IF overclocked, if not get the BE.

Thsi RAM apparantly overclocks very well. Its cheaper and would probably run at ddr1000 speeds when overclocked-

Just realized that you just want a GAMING PC.

Since you don't have a TV Tuner, low noise, and low power consumption but you want to run new games.... you really aren't looking for a HTPC build.

It is mainly for use as an HTPC, I am putting my DVD collection on it and will be running media portal. I already have a blu-ray player and tv tuner and water cooling parts. Just trying to decide on the parts above. It is mainly for use as an HTPC but I wouldnt mind it being able to run a few games here and there (but not at necssarily super high performance).

How often do you plan to game on it? I leave my HTPC on 24/7 but get annoyed that is draws power at idle. Dropping in a decent video card mean that you're looking at like 40w (or $3 a month). You may want to wait a bit longer for Hybrid SLI. It has a feature of disabling the discrete video card when idle and using onboard only in 2D.

As for your build, a 780G isn't necessary since you will be using a discrete card.
