Is the Q6600/Q6700 still worth the price of admission?

Right now I've got a Q6600 at 3.4GHz in a GA-P35-DS3L with a Tuniq Tower

I've got another system, with a Celeron and an Abit AB9 Pro

I was thinking of taking my Q6600 and putting it in the Abit with stock cooling. My girlfriend can use it for WoW, and I can use it for encoding

Then I was thinking of picking up a Q6700 and putting it in the GA-P35-DS3L. Hopefully I can get a little more out of it than 3.4GHz, not much though

Is that a good idea? I know the Q9300 is out. Can I hit something like 3.6GHz using air with one of these?

Thanks in advance guys

3.6ghz has been done many times for Q6600's/6700's. Heat is an issue though, but with a TT120 you should be able to still reach 3.6ghz and be ok.

On the other hand, 200mhz isn't much of an upgrade... you may as well just get another Q6600, or another dually. Or, go for the 9300 and really get an OC.

It's more of an upgrade for my secondary system. The extra speed boost in my main rig is more of a bonus

I'll gladly pick up a Q9300, as it's only a little bit more, I'm just worried that I might not being able to OC it as much

Q9300 with a 7.5 multi? Havent seen many OC results from them, but i doubt your gona see anything more than 3.2-3.3....

Q6600 is tried n true. Q6700 if its the same price, not worth much more considering the end OC will be about the same...

45nm Q9xxx are still being released slowly, my choices in that cat would be Q9450 8x multi - Q9550 8.5x multi and Q9650 9x multi(Q3 release) the others are the lower models, similar to the 6 series.

I'd get the Q6700, the price is very good, and its a very overclockable CPU.

so if i'm understanding this correct your other quad will be doing the encoding?

what will you be doing with the ds3l rig? if it's not encoding i would get a dually and shoot for 4ghz

I second that. Pick up an E8400 and a T.R.U.E., Tuniq Tower, or Ultima-90 and you're off to the races. I'd suggest lapping ANY Thermalright products as they come with a rough finish on the block...which still brings surprisingly good performance.
