How is that cpu overkill? 1MB of L2 Cache isnt great.. Anyways lets not argue. Let's see what others reccomend..

Let's not forget that we're all individuals here. What's way too slow for one person may be way too much for the next person.

Are you to try some OC'ing, or not? 'Cause that'll affect what I'd recommend. If you don't want to OC, get the E6750 and the stock cooler (which works fine for stock speeds). If you want to OC and don't mind having less L2 cache, get a E21x0 CPU and OC it (they oc easily) to 3+ GHz to get close to the performance of an E6750 for real cheap... Stock cooler would be fine on the e21x0, but you could always get the Arctic Freezer 7 if stock doesn't work for you.

Again, I repeat, it was overkill for ME. For me personally. I'm not making a blanket statement that this E2180 is overkill. Period. In fact, if I were to go back to it, it would still be far more than I'd ever need out of a processor. Again, this is for me.

We have to be careful. With the e2180 in particular, we can't set expectations above 2.9GHz anymore. 3.0GHz is like a bonus now because these are the newer e2180s. It was the older ones that could easily reach 3.0+GHz. I mean, wow, just check out linskingdom's e2180 overclocking adventures!

I could not get mine past 2.95GHz no matter what I tried. And then I saw a few other people having the same problem: Can't get past 2.95GHz. One couldn't go over 2.90GHz, and he had the newest chip of the bunch of us at that time.

what's happening with these new chips? I remember just about every single old 2140/2160 did 3.2G.

E2180's OC easily and exceed performance of stock 6750 or 6850 CPU's--how does that suck? My sig says I'm running my at 3.0ghz, but I've been running it at 3.5GHz for the last few months and it flys.

There is no way even a stock 2180 doesn't far exceed a P4. This 2180 at stock exceeds the performance of my previous AMD 4400+ X2 with a mild OC. So with all due respect, think before you type... Sure, it's not a Quad or a 8xxx series CPU, but it'll keep up with the best of them...

But if you have the cash and want a dual core, I'd say go E8x00 series. If you don't have the cash ($200 is kinda "in limbo" for a good CPU/HSF budget), then go E21xx series, or a used E6xxx series chip.

Go with the E2180. And if possible, try to get an older one on eBay or somewhere else. The newer ones don't overclock as well.

Not when you can overclock them by over 50%.

I had an E2140 running at 3520 and an E2180 running at 3400. not exactly screaming, but not slow either.

edit: Any conroe will be better than that P4. I would look used ans you can get a Q6600 for less than $200.

Edit2: I just sold an E2140, DS3L and 2x1gb balistix for $160. the deals are out there, you just need to be patient and look around.
