I need to setup a web/security cam asap!

Thread Starter
So heres the scoop, my family owns 2 houses. 1 we occupy and 1 that we only go to on weekends. And within the past 2 weeks, someone has broken into our backdoor and went into the basement to unplug our septic pump. This has already caused over $1,000 dollars in damages in our second house.

JUST TODAY my mom told me that it was unplugged again! Nobody lives in the house so it couldnt be a family member. My answer to this problem is to setup a candid camera using an old computer and a webcam set to motion activation to catch this intruder and inform the police.

I need suggestions on whats the best camera to use for a reasonable price, along with software that allows for motion activated recording.

A better solution might be to get a monitored house alarm from someplace like ADT. That way, when Mr./Ms. Vandal decides to mess with your property, a loud alarm goes off and the cops come.

So, they're just unplugging your pump? Sounds like some kids playing a prank.

Do you have an older system which you have laying around? Or do you prefer using a dedicated DVR system?

How many cameras are you looking for?

If you have a old system, I suggest you to get this:

And then hook it up with whichever cameras you want. Videosecu has some good cheap cameras.

If you are looking for webcam solution, then you can buy a $20 webcam, and use it with yawcam Yawcam MAY work with some actual DVR cameras, but probably should go to their forums or ask the developer about that.

I agree with edogg, if you want to really protect your house.

Security cameras are just to catch the people, but then no one will be able to go stop them, or even scare them.

I am using both Yawcam and the Videosecu capture card. So I can say they work well. Yawcam is very simple to use and very user friendly with their user interface. Works well with webcam. It can't record, but it can take pictures. And I mean many pictures.... So it is just as well as recording. Great motion sensor. The capture card is dvr recording, and also has great motion sensor. Both can be configured to webview/seen over the internet.

I know how you feel... camera is a necessity to protect you! It did for me when sanitation was blaming us for something, but we won because we caught the time that they mention.

I feel rage for you! Breaking into someone's house is the ultimate breach if you ask me and the laws are far too easy on these people. They know where they are not supposed to be but the do it get caught, released and do it again.
I would suggest an ambush, or maybe some boobie traps.
