One tip I haven't seen here yet is to make sure you shoot the initial blue orb of the guardian as many times as possible at the start of the level, even before he gets his first trio of seekers. It is his most vulnerable time, since he has no seekers yet and all you need to do is side-step a little to avoid his initial tantrum of fireballs. This is a good way to inflict maximum damage on him before he even has a chance to pursue you! If you can get 3 or 4 BFG 9000 rounds into him at the start of the level, he is already close to dead before you even get started. Good luck!

I would've said persistence but hey, why not have people tell you how to beat the game and take the fun out of it for ya? Seriously, you are near the end of the game, why take the fun out of it by having people tell you how to beat it when part of the fun is figuring it out yourself?

If I can't beat a game I come back to it later but I never ask for help, otherwise I'd just watch videos of people playing/beating it and never waste any time at all on it.
