The first day Nvidia named the new 9800GTX and 9800GX2 were just wrong from a consumer's stand point. I know this is just their marketing strategy to make the new cards more appealing to consumers becouse of greater # 9800 > 8800. They're using the number tactic to fasely leading consumers in thinking that they're buying a completely brand new technology and innovated video card. But to some of us who has a basic understanding of a video card's spec, we can clearly know that a 9800GTX = overclocked version of an 8800GTS 512mb. It seems the marketing team for pusing out the supposely "new" video cards namely 9800GTX and 9800GX2 are somewhat deceptive in terms of a moral value but it's still within the legal boundary. I can understand that their primary goal is to keep up the sales for every quarter and to make a profit.

If Nvidia was being more honest, they should have named 9800GTX to 8800GTX 512MB (G92). The only difference between a 8800GTS 512mb and 9800GTX 512mb are basically their core/shader/mem clocks. Both cards are using the G92 core and their performance should be equally the same at identical clocks. However, the way of their drivers are written may have an impact on their performances in real world applications. The new name I suggested, 8800GTX 512mb, would be less confusing and more correctly leading for consumers. 9800GX2 should be 8800GX2 1.0GB based on the theory.

Now to answer your question, if you want a sub-part performance of a "9800" series card, 8800GT 512mb (G92) is the card you're looking to get. The only difference between a 8800GT 512mb and 8800GTS 512mb both using G92 core is the # of stream processor they have, 96 and 128 SP respectively.
