[tcMag] Windows Vista sales reach 140 million

After reporting its performance for Q3 of FY08, Microsoft has went on to tell the world that it has sold 140 million Windows Vista licenses to date. Back in January, one year after the release of Vista for consumers, Microsoft stated that it reached the 100 million milestone so, depending on how you look at it, Vista's recent performance may look good or bad.

With Service Pack 1 out, Vista adoption is likely to go up a bit but the OS is still lacking a glow signaling success as corporations are not in any hurry to upgrade to it and XP users just got SP3.

lol.

Anyway XP is a very good OS so there is not much of a pull factor from Vista to be honest. Vista is a superb OS. Especially with SP1. XP will improve even more with SP3. For business's XP is still a perfectly viable environment to work in. Why go to the hassle of migrating to Vista when you dont have to !.

Adult Swim did a bump with all the things that have failed over the years. One thing popped up, a computer voice said,"fail" and it went over like 2 dozen things in rapid succession and one of them was Windows Vista. I really like Vista (driver support not withstanding), but I thought it was funny.

Do you know what I miss? Mac OS 9 and previous where the computer woman would talk to you when you had an error and then she'd say: "It's not my fault".
I always got so alarmed when that happened and I just loved it how she was so eager to point the finger elsewhere.

Didn't read the article, so maybe it mentioned this; but the numbers are a bit misleading. Not all of those Vista sales are actually running copies of Vista. It is extremely common for business users to buy their Windows desktop liceses under a volume license agreement that includes "downgrade" rights. So they may be buying a Vista license and Microsoft is logging a Vista sale, but the company is actually running XP instead. (This is exactly what we do.)

I really don't hate Vista, really, I don't, but my brother and I couldn't stop laughing when I found this googling "vista fail" on youtube.

Something to consider about the Vista OEM downgrade option: how many of those "sales" are of the downgrade option?

Considering many corporations and especially SMB won't be upgrading to any new OS for at least 2+ years (tech relative still services NT4 for a couple of businesses who refused to upgrade since the late 90s!), the sales figures look quite bloated -- as businesses aren't the folks buying the Vista licenses (MS's prime $$$$$$$$$$$ market).
