Recommend me an Intel CPU without overclocking... - Page 6

No doubt.. a faster CPU is going to help you utilize more of the GPU's available power.

..yes , now just add some good RAM [800mhz cas3 or 4] and you will be set. *if you plan on using a 64bit OS I would also recommend 2-4gbs of RAM.. XP or 32bit Vista will be fine with 2gb's.

These are the "kind" unfortunately they have been out of stock forever+day.

No overclocking? Honestly i don't see the point in buying a expensive ass CPU and not overclocking when you can get a much cheaper one OC it on air and get almost as good results.

If I were to attempt an OC, what CPU would be recommended?

Umm, no. The builder point is "not OC'ing NOW" so a cheaper, slower cpu would be a terrible option. If you are not OC'ing..then you want the fastest cpu you can get... which he is NOT doing either! He is looking for a balanced system that he will have the ability to OC if/when he sees fit.

*PS- under 300$ for a cpu is not "expensive ass" either.

@ snuffle-> sounds like a good build to me, even if you do not take my suggestions. I have a hunch you will though.

I still would not change the cpu's I have recommended..all will do over 3.6ghz for daily use..as will most others. Mainly the advantage to a E8xxx is less power consumption and heat than a E6xxx... allowing for higher clock speeds and cheaper cooling. The Q6600 is by far the bargain buy, with 8mb's of cache and a 10x multi.. it is one of the easiest Q4's to OC + the buss speed makes it a perfect choice for 800/1066mhz RAM.

My RAM is DDR2-800
5-5-5-12

Will that be ok if I were to attempt an OC?

If you are going for a moderate overclock go q6600 all the way. At stock speeds, e8400. The e8500 is almost $100 more for only 160 MHz.

Also, the q6600 has a x9 multi.

Most boards will let you set either memory clock speed or a divider. Memory shouldn't be an issue when talking about overclocking the CPU.

Right the Q6600 is much cheaper than the E8500. With that in mind, I would lean towards the Q6600... unless the E8500 is a much better value/better OC potential.

I'd probably go with the q6700 for oc potential as it has a 10x multi, therefore you would only need to get the FSB to 400 to get a cpu running at 4ghz.
