Or try an Opty 1210E or 1212 for $70 -$80 for a 3.0 joy ride...

if you cant go phenom...then 6400+ BE. extra clock speed + extra L2. if you cant afford that, then the 5000+ BE would also be good, but only 1mb l2

I'd be worried that all of those options are a side-step at best. True, the 6400+ is 3.2 GHz stock as opposed to having to overclock your CPU to 3.2GHz, but I am pretty sure that an increase of 400MHz (up from your current 2.8) is negligible if you're talking about gaming performance on the same architecture (I think we are, right?). I'd be surprised if there's a game out that won't play properly on your X2, but will play much better on a 6400+--it just might not be worth the cash IMHO.

(1) don't worry about cache in making your final decision--it's overrated. There are some instances where having more is better, but you'll never notice it other than in synthetic benchmarks.

(2) I hate to bring it up in the AMD forum, but honestly, if you're looking for a whole lot more performance out of a CPU right now, unless you're thinking of going quad, the only real dual-core upgrade worthwhile would be to something like an Intel E8400 or the like (because they overclock to phenomenal speeds). I'd just be worried that you'd spend a good deal of money on a new CPU, and not get the performance you were hoping for.

I'm actualy thinking of putting it off now, I've always used AMD so I know little about intel. I might just wait it out untill I can afford a new motherboard aswell as the CPU and do some reading up in the meantime Then take the plunge to Intel. IHateIndecision!
