The Fridge Experiment...

Thread Starter
I'm at work with my brother at the moment and after he saw me trawling through websites to find a better cooling solution for my rig he came up with an idea...why not use 'The Guiness Fridge'

I got a small fridge at home, purely for housing Guiness but I'm pretty sure if I remove the Guiness I can house my motherboard etc inside. Obviously I'd have to make modifications for power leads, etc and put a bit more thought behind it but is this actually a good idea?

This comment should be enough to end entertaining the idea of fridge cooling. If it's prominent enough for someone to plainly sig the answer, you should stop now.

Fridge are designed to keep things cool. You put a hot cup of water in there and it turns on to help extract the heat. After awhile the fridge shuts down and maintains the temp with insulation.

A fridge cannot continuously cool a 200-500w load. The compressor will burn out since it is designed to run in short spurts.

Fridges aren't meant to run 24/7, much less cool 100+ watts of heat.

Fridges are not meant to be on 24/7. They are for cooling food and drinks which typically do not emit heat, once the fridge has reached the ambient temp of lets say 5C, the motor shuts off and then only turns on when the temperature is raised by opening the door etc. The pc is constantly emitting heat from the processor, HD etc. The fridge would have to be on all the time to constantly try to cool air, that is constantly being heated by the pc. Typcially the ambient in most pc's is probably around 34C.
