Question about RAM-FSB(OC) while OC'ed CPU

Hi all,

I have a very specific question, so please read carefully.

I recently bought cheap Ram Aeneon Xtune (wanted stable ram). Didn't buy OCZ because of couple of negative comments on reliability of that product.
Aeneon has a poor OC capability tho.
My boardchipset will be p35 (Gigabyte)

My question follows,

I'm going to OC my q6700, funny thing however is, that when I OC it to atleast 3,2ghz on that stock cooler, I will have to lower the fsb of my ram (correct so far?). When lowering the RAMs FSB I don't actually have to lower the voltage do I? Because the specific RAM I'll have is already at 1,8 which is really low and possibly not lowerable!

Also, what does this mean for the ram, that it automatically has a higher overclocking potential because it's maximum FSB is now further away?

Can someone explain me this please? :-)

If you plan on overclocking, you should not buy cheap ram. No matter what anyone says review wise, OCZ is a king of overclocking. It also has lifetime garantee even if you fry them while overclocking.

And no, your ram will not have any extra overclocking potential.

^Wrong. I did 900Mhz 1.975 with my 20 dollar OCZ Value RAM 667.

I don't want to OC my ram. 1066 is fairly fast lol. And I want to be on the safe side concerning RAM and GFX card.

I am just concerned wether I need to lower the FSB of that ram and need to lower the vdimm? That was my question.

I'm not planning to oc my ram. I want to focus on overclocking my q6700 and have a very stable non-oced ram running. See the question above.

not quite sure what your getting at..... but u cant run the ram lower than the FSB on an intel rig....1-1 is the lowest ratio

Then does it make sense to OC a Q6700 (1033) on 1033er ram? People say that goes better with 400er..

Yes. The processor has 1066 fsb and the ram 1066mhz.

Don't I need to change the ram clocks ( down? ) when I go way up with the board FSB in order to push that CPU up? I'm just new and I'm getting that CPU in a week.

when u assemble your rig...... ur 1066 ram will be running an effective 266 FSB
x4 gives u ur 1066 ......so it will be fine 266 x2 will only give u an effective ram speed of 532mhz stock @ 1-1 ratio ..plenty of headroom there

hope this helps.......

Do you mean the following, for example you gonna run your Quad at 400x8=3.2 and the memory at 1066 then you need a 3:4 divider (FSB : DRAM, FSB 400 divide with 3 = 133,333 multiply with 4 = 533,332 = 1066 actual memory speed), on most not all ASUS board that´s "strap 400" (FSB strap to North Bridge).

You can also go with FSB 426 and use strap 266 and divider 4:5 or FSB 355 and strap 266 divider 2:3.

Strap 400 can be a problem depending on which board you run or gonna run.

It could be nice to see you run your Quad 424x9=3.816 or even 424x10=4.240 with a mem speed @1066.

Do I understand you right?
