E6600 - Ram upgrade kills overclocking :(

Hey

Think this is the right place for this... if not yell at me!

I'm Running an E6600 on an Asus P5B-E. Shortly after buying it, I clocked it up to about 3.2 GHZ (didn't need to touch anything except the frequency. Boosted that up to around 350MHz) before the temperature stopped me going further. Recently, I decided to upgrade the RAM. I looked around for advise, and got ram that was almost the same as the original (Original ram: 2 x Corsair XMS2 800MHz 512MB 5-5-5-12; New ram: 2 x Corsair XMS2 800MHz 1024MB 5-5-5-12). I have it set up so the new 1 gig sticks are in channel A, and the two half gig sticks are in B. Since then however, I have not been able to push the frequency passed 316MHz without it getting massively unstable, and above 320MHz, it wont even boot. This has somewhat perplexed me! I was wondering someone out there could shed some light onto what might be causing this.

Thanks!
Pride and Joy!

Anybody else thinking that this is related to the fact that all 4 memory slots are occupied? That's my guess anyways. Filling all 4 dimm slots make a lot of work for the north bridge and consequently can hinder an overclock. What kind of NB voltage are you using?

Fill out your UserCP, and then we can help you out a little bit better.

Based on your description, it sounds like the memory controller is indeed overloaded. Just use the two 1GB sticks of Corsair memory (I happen to have the same board, memory, and CPU) and you should have no problems running it.

Thanks for all the replies!

I ripped out the 2*512MB sticks, but no dice. Still can't push the frequency past 316Mhz

I've updated my usercp with all the details I have on me at the moment, hopefully someone can spot something I've missed

@Mr. Jules: Not sure how relevant the NB voltage is, but a cursory inspection did not turn it up (I haven't changed it!) I'll have a more in depth look later

I have no NB voltage control on my board either...so it will get a bit tricky. You should set the "FSB Termination Voltage" to 1.3v for now, as that should be enough for up to 400MHz FSB.

Did that, and still can't go over 320

@whe3ls: Not sure how do do that... will look it up later and try!

To do that, set your "DRAM Frequency" as low as you can go. So for 320MHz FSB, you'll set it to DDR2-640.
