Windows Running Slower over time? - Page 2

a few tips:

1. clean out your prefetch
2. Run a RegCleaner.. restart, then re-run steps 1 & 2 before going on to #3
3. Remove any unwanted startup items from your msconfig file
4. Defrag the main HDD after doing a clean-up [I recommend defragging at least 4 times.. in a row]
5. Turn down the advanced graphics properties [ie- shutting off smooth scroll.. etc]
6. Disable unwanted services from the msconfig file
7. Minimize and turn off un-used functions in gpedit.msc

.. pretty much the first few steps I take in trimming down a OS for benching and such.

Reinstall your OS. Windows does that...

With any luck, you would still have atleast a couple years before support ended, and by that time MS MAY have made an OS since Vista that actually runs.
I wouldn't agree with this statement in fact I would reverse it and say Vista runs a bit better than XP as my PC with Vista feels a lot faster than my old PC with XP (I know different hardware, but had same amount of ram). At least Vista wants to use my 2GB of ram and more! XP never really went over 1.2GB. I know I haven't had Vista for as long, only 3 months, but I haven't really noticed much of a slow down, maybe a little which is natural with my hard disks now nearly half written.

But basically I would say either fully reformat, but if you don't want to do that then do what some of the others have said here. Can't really think of any other helpful progs at the top of my head.

XP has been acting up lately for me as well. Long load times, sluggish response...Windows has a tendancy of just becoming lazy so I agree with a fresh installation every 6-9 months. It's like an oil change for your computer.
