Perplexed by my Q6600 temps - Page 2

what the weather like in alabama? today it was rather warm in cali and it is about 76F right now in my room (window was closed all day). i am idling at 38-39-36-37C with my fans on low. could there be something preventing the heatsink from making contact with the cpu? is the NB cooler in the way at all?

However, your idles would be higher if you had disabled C1E/SpeedStep in the BIOS, since it doesnt drop to the x6 multiplier.

Also, if you are running at stock speed (266x9=2400MHz) your C1E would take your chip down to 1600MHz (266x6) and it would be a lot cooler than the temps you posted at idle.

Im going to have to say you arent getting good contact with your chip, the AS5 is too thick, or the tuniq is not mounted tight enough. The tuniqs have a tendency to mount too loosely. Check around and you can find a thread on here about putting pennies in between the tuniq's metal mounting strip in order to get a better contact with the chip's IHS. I couldnt find the thread offhand but I remember it being here somewhere.
Inbetween the middle of the "H" bar and the base of the Tuniq? I'll dig around for that thread before I try reseating it but that's an interesting idea. (EDIT: Thanks for posting that) Any tips on how I can tell that it's mounted tight enough, other than the springs appearing tightly coiled?

I would also like to note that C1E is indeed enabled in the BIOS.

you shouldnt have very much horizontal motion if the HSF mounted tight enough. by very much i mean you should have to twist pretty hard to get it to rotate. You said it moved around like an iceberg, that seems kind of loose if you ask me.

It was moving like that while I was trying to tighten. Once I got'em tightened it took a bit of effort to get it to rotate, but you're probably right in that it's not as tight as it should be. I'll let you guys know what happens after I reseat it tomorrow, and I'll try to take a picture of my AS5 application just to verify I did it right.

Its your ambients, man. @&C is WAY too hot....average room temperature is 20-22C. Im no expert on the effects of ambient heat on heatsinks, but im pretty sure it hurts a lot. The only thing i can suggest is getting a better fan, one with good airflow and static pressure. You have to compensate giving your heatsink hot air by giving it a lot of it. If you brought your ambients down to 22, im sure you would get AT LEAST a 7-12C difference in temps.

Nope AND I have the 2 25CM fans in my case blowing air constantly in the machine. I think my Tuniq is warped and I've thought many times of just purchasing another cooler and I think I'm going to pretty soon. I've reseated using the dot method and the line method on my quad and both results give the SAME exact temps and its REALLY tight on the board.

Azahrn/mshbrian,

I'm having the same high temps also on my b3 with vendetta2. Like you guys, i reseated many times and used different TIM's, but the same results. Even turned the AC full blast in my room where I had to put on a jacket but idles the same 50c over 60c loads at the cores using coretemp/everest. I don't understand how it can idle at 50c when the pipes and base are cold to the touch. Seems like my stock intel cooler is about the same temps before using the ocz.

Can we rma our heatsinks? OR maybe the temp sensors really are faulty?
