Perplexed by my Q6600 temps - Page 3

I have your setup to some degree: Tuniq on a Q6600 (790i mobo). My idles with case shut tight are 31/33/36/27 (slightly better w/case opened). You should be getting better temps. Couple of things:

1) Did you do the single line of thermal paste and kinda wiggle your Tuniq into place?
2) The thumb screws are hard to torque down...look to see if you've got a good compression on the springs and the tower itself is tight and not moving.
3) Check to make sure your "H" bar is installed the right side up (bowed upwards slightly before torque is applied).
4) Check to see that your exhaust fans are actually blowing air AWAY from the case...it's easy to accidently put them in backwards.

Good luck.

I read some articles that the temp sensors can stick on the quads especially at lower idling temps, where it gives out incorrect core readings. Especially more often on the 45nm chips. Also the 100c Tjunction max be incorrect on the q6600 B3's. Possibly 85c max for the B3's, which makes the core temp readings off by 15c. Anyone hear about this.

my temps on a G0, though OCed to a mild 3.2

Keep in mind that its with side panel open, though.

Those are some wicked temps

I have a question regarding mine. I followed the AS5 instructions for application and I'm getting some terrible temps. (using speedfan to read)

I idle at high 30's to mid 40's (depending on which core) and I load at low to high 50's (depending on core)
Mind you, this is at 2.4ghz and 1.2v

Here are my specs.
Q6600 G0
P5N-E SLI
2x 8800GTS 512
Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX heatsink and fan
P182 with two extra fans blowing onto the vid cards.

I just bought some lapping materials so I'm going to have a go at the heatsink (not the cpu, I like warranties!) and see if that does anything.

Any ideas?

LTSMASH,

you should use coretemp or everest to check your core temps, I get strange readings on speedfan. 30s to 40s is fine anyways. 60s to 70s is when I start to worry.

Just finished reseating. Granted these should go down once the AS5 breaks in, but my idle temps are essentially the same as before, with a similar ambient (about ~24c, was ~26-27c last night). Idles are 39/39/38/37 as read by Core Temp. My load temps have improved a bit, as they're now 62/62/60/60 after 10 minutes of Prime. Unfortunately, they still seem wrong.

The Tuniq is definitely tighter than it was before. It took quite a bit of effort to get it to turn either way, and even then it just barely turned. I tried using the pencil mod with the AS5 but after wasting about a gram of what was in the tube to get out a two milimeter long line, I gave up on it and tried using a toothpick instead. For comparison's sake, it's roughly as thick as a grain of jasmine rice and about as long as what's shown on Arctic's website. I'm at a loss for how to apply this any better than I just did.

This is after I cleaned the chip off:
Cleaned chip

This is my best attempt to apply the line. I'm still not satisfied with it but after spending an hour cleaning and recleaning it about 4 times thanks to other bad applications, that's the best I got. It's probably too damn thick still:
Line of AS5

There was also an interesting scratch on the bottom of my Tuniq and I have no idea where it came from. It wasn't there when I first put it in and nothing else around the processor is scratched, so it's a mystery:

Yep, I kind of figured. I wish I knew how you got lines that thin out of your AS5 tube. Mine refuses to cooperate at all.

I make it pop out just a little, then dab it all over the place. Felt like I was making a spider web. You can always just put a drop somewhere, and then pick some up with a tooth-pic to apply it.
