Suggest 2x2GB Superb Overclocking DDR2 RAM

Thread Starter
Within the next month I will be upgrading my RAM to 4GB. Since I want to be able to overclock it to the speed of my FSB, I will need to go with 2-2GB sticks rather than 4-1GB sticks. I would like to get suggestions for RAM that will overclock superbly.

I want RAM that can run 1100MHz 24/7 and timings of 5-5-5-15-2T, though lower timings are definitely preferred (my current RAM will do it at 5-4-4-5-2T). I don't care about the speed of the RAM as long as it can do the above in a reasonable voltage (say 2.3V or lower). Obviously we are talking about DDR2 only.

Finally, I have the OCZ XTC RAM cooler so please no suggestions of RAM that have massive heat sinks unless it will be cooler than other RAM with the XTC cooler.

I understand that Crucial is a subsidiary of Micron, so would Crucial Ballistix be those revered Micron D9s? Anyway, please suggest away!

Yes, ballistix would be the D9's, but a lot of people have had issues with them
I would definitely reccommend a set of G.Skills in your case.

not sure about 1100, but one reviewer said they run @ 1066MHz @ 5-5-5-12

I have this set and so far it has been working perfectly @ 900MHz @ 4-4-4-12

What issues?

G.Skill no longer has D9s. They don't make the HZ brand anymore - or at least they are no longer sold on newegg. If I were to get G.Skill, which would do the task I require?

Hey I've heard that this G Skill RAM is freaking amazing for overclocking and reliability, so I thought I'd pass on the word:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166

You can't argue against it's track record, it's got sweet reviews! I wish I could get some, but kinda short on the cash atm. One of the best of it's kind, hope this helps your search

Well, apparently ballistix have a tendency to die. That particular info is all second hand to me, as i've never had my ballistix die on me, but it's something to keep in mind.

maybe this is what you are looking for

PK overclocks better than PQ from what I've heard

Perhaps that would explain why PKs are more expensive on Newegg even when they are slower.

I wonder why people have issues with Crucial if they have the coveted D9s? Newegg is having a nice sale on Crucial right now, too.

Performance King beats Performance Queen!
(They both beat a Drama Queen, but aren't quite as entertaining)
Seriously,
PK 800 = PQ 1000 (but aren't binned as well) which are both better than the PQ 800 (Differnt IC and lower Binning)

Apparently, the new, ballistics are not Microns either, (Most 2x2 kits are in fact PSC),
The G.Skills you are looking for are the 8 layer PCB 8500s;
I even got a Mushkin "guy" to admit that "Yeah, they'll probably clock higher than my high end sticks"

Hop over to the XS forums, they have some great OC threads discussing OCability of various 2x2 kits.

The only kit that I have seen produce "real world" results better than the G.Skills was on a thread over there where a guy got 8GB of Dommies 1066s up to highish 11s on reasonably low volts.
The new OCZ flex will run 1150s all day, but, has issues:
With the watercooling nozzles, unless you are W/C'ing them then probably they are not too great on cooling (with the reduced fin area- dunno tho, haven't seen any real reviews or members with a set raving about them.),
They Won't fit under your cooler, and
You can't fit more than two sticks in 99.99% of MoBo's (They're even thicker than the Geils.) and they're rated at 2.1V but really need something like 2.3V for "stock" 1150 from the factory. Toasty!
Go for the G.Skills 8500 PK
Cheers
