Want to OC my q9300

Thread Starter
Hello all. I'm quite new to overclocking and was hoping you guys could help me figure out what i should do.

I've built a new computer:

Q9300 processor
XFX nforce 790i motherboard
Corsair 1066mhz DDR3 memory (2GIG, waiting for another 2 to arrive)
XFX 8800GT Alpha dog 512mb video cards (two cards in Sli)

Basically, what would you recommend i OC? And how far?

I was thinking that OC to 3.2ghz for my proc was plenty powerful for me, and i don't wanna risk breaking it to that's pretty much the max i'll go i think.

What about the RAM? Is it Overclockable? is it worth it?

Video cards... what can i do with them?

Please keep in mind that i don't want to go too far as i can't really afford to buy new components. So safe OCing is what i'm looking for.

Oh and sorry if this isn't in the right forum.

whats cooling that cpu? i wouldnt oc ANY with stock cooling (you can try)
with better cooling, i would try 450x7.5= 3.375GHZ. that would be a little below max, since ive seen those things do 3.4-3.5ghz.

you dont need to worry about your ram set it as unlinked and put it at stock settings and then take your quad to the sky.

I bought a simple Masscool 8W553 / Socket 775 / Aluminum / CPU Cooling Fan from tigerdirect. Since some ppl had said good things about it, i figured it was plenty for me. I did not, however, think i would be overclocking this computer.

And like i said, 3.2 is the max i'll go. Hell 3.0 would be plenty if i can safely get that with this fan.

Umm... unlinked? Please explain. Like i said, i'm new to overclocking, as in never done it. I'm reading a lot but i don't know all yet. And i'm guessing you mean don't touch the settings on the ram other than "unlinking" them.

And why unlink them? what's the advantage?

Ok i went into the bios just to have a look around. From what i can see, i can't change any settings on the cpu other than the multiplier. And it's stuck at x7. My proc should run at x7.5 so i'm losing here because of my bios....

Should i change the bios? Update or get one from another company (if at all possible?)

Gah OCing is more and more complicated the more i read.

I have the Q9300 and the eVGA 780i and I had to update my mobo BIOS before I could tweak my CPU and RAM. You might look in on any BIOS updates before OCing, just a suggestion. I have safely got my Q9300 to 3.4 now without much fuss, but I am not keeping her there to preserve lifespan. But I know soon I'm just going to kick her into high gear and go for gold. Keep us updated on the OCing. Goodluck.
