agreed. if i wer to buy one of those now id defnately buy the 8800gts. but among the 9800gx2,3870x2 and the 9800gtx id definatley say the 9800gtx is the best for the price. and the 8800gtx is not being made and is at the end of its life so buying that over a $290 9800gtx is pointless.

and why arent they comparable? they are both graphics cards. they are both in the same segment of the market and they provide similar performance. one of which does so for $100 less.
Jesus, of course they are not comparible. One is SINGLE CORE and one is DUAL CORE therefore THEY ARE NOT COMPARIBLE. According to your logic I can compare a Pentium 4 EE and a QX9650? Since "both are CPUs". Let me reiterate myself, you CANNOT compare APPLES and ORANGES!

so your little survey seems to have backfired on you. at the time of posting 71.43% play at 1600x1200 and above(hi-res). and more people play on 1920x1200 than on 1280x1024.
Where's your Proof? Source? Link?

Here's mine: Primary Display Resolution (1,648,754 Users) & Overclock.net Resolution Survey

According to Steam 527,945 users play at 1024 x 768 (32.02 %) and 647,698 users play at 1280 x 960 (39.28 %). Only 26,990 users play at 1600 x 1200 (1.64 %) and 37,427 users play at 1920 x 1200 (2.27 %)

I do not see any proof of your 71.43% @ 1600x1200 nor do I see proof of your 1920x1200 > 1280x1024.

Quote:
...most ppl who play on lower res dont do so because they prefer it..its either because they dont have a highest end gpu or a big monitor.
You KNOW everyone else's resolutions. Amazing! It makes my survey useless.

Look at the Steam survey, more people own a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series card than any other card yet 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 960 are the most played resolutions. You say monitor not big enough? Survey shows more people own a 24'+ Widescreen than any other Widescreen.

Quote:
so you are saying that all the thousands of tech review sites that do gfx card reviews have no idea what they are doing?
They know what they are doing, helping video card companies market their product.

You amuse me. You say you look at reviews from other sites around the net yet you have any idea who pays those sites to write reviews. I have proved all your points invalid. This debate is over.

You can't kill AGP
AGP will live on
PCIe tried to kill AGP
But they failed, as they were smite to the ground
PCI tried to kill AGP
But they failed, as they were stricken down to the ground
Intel tried to kill AGP Hahahahahaha
They failed, as they were thrown to the ground
Aargh! yeah!

No-one can destroy AGP
AGP will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of AGP
We tried to win for why we do not know

P35 tried to destroy AGP, but AGP had its way
PCIe then tried to dethrone AGP, but AGP was in the way
AMD tried to destroy AGP, but AGP was much too strong
VIA tried to defile AGP, but VIA was proven wrong
Yea!

AGP!
It comes from hell!

Song is certain proof AGP will never die.

How does that make them not comparable? Both solutions do the same thing. You can compare the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 to the Athlon XP 1500+ if you want, just don't be surprised at the results. The HD3870X2 has to compete with the 9800GTX and 8800GTX - those are the only cards in its price range (approximately), and they all are designed to do the same thing.

Why are we not allowed to compare any of the examples you listed? A Pentium 4 is slower and cheaper than a QX9650. An apple is usually not as a bitter as an orange.

What was so hard about that?

Then buying a $290 9800GTX over a $220 8800GTS would also be pointless.

Why initially agree with me, but then leave out the 8800GTS as an option?

AFAIK, the 8800GTX is still being made and they haven't been EOL'd yet. Even if it were "at the end of it's life", why would that matter? Newer doesn't mean better. If you want to make a point with price/performance, do so with the actual numbers.

And when it comes to said pricing, you can't have it both ways. If you can somehow justify the price difference between the 8800GTS and 9800GTX; then you shouldn't have any problem with the price difference between the 9800GTX and 8800GTX (by logical comparison).

But when it comes down to it, that just detracts us from the real point here. The 9800GTX is an utter waste of money when you can get almost the exact same card for significantly less. A 4-5% performance increase for a ~$75 price premium are the real numbers. No pointless labels, grouping of cards, or comparisons leaving ones out will change that.

You need to judge things by objective reasoning and real data instead of subjective labels and irrelevant comparisons.

Nobody has mentioned that both the 8800GTS and 9800GTX both use the same G92 chipset, and 128 stream processors. The specs are IDENTICAL for both cards! The only difference is the clock speed!!!!!!!!!

Check it if you don't believe me:
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....=559&card2=548

All a 9800GTX is, is an overclocked G92 8800GTS. Now please; GET BACK ON TOPIC!

EDIT: If you use the overclocking bit on that page to Overclock the 8800GTS to the same clock speeds as the 9800GTX, you'll see all the numbers are identical.

As with car reviews or any reviews for that matter, Sedans are not compared with Coupes and All Wheel Drive are not compared with Front Wheel/Rear Wheel Drive. Therefore Single Core is compared with Single Core and Dual Core is compared with Dual Core, SLi is compared with Crossfire, etc

Anyone is allowed to make anytype of comparision, being a reasonable and fair comparision is another story.

You car example is a bad one. Comparing a single core GPU to a dual core GPU is more analogous to comparing a 2WD ATV with a 4WD ATV. They both are designed to do exactly the same thing.

And you're wrong anyways. AWD Porsches ahave long been compared to RWD sports cars in performance tests. As are AWD Lancer EVOs and Subaru WRXs compared to to other high performance FWD and RWD cars.
