e6600 B2 Temps... WTH?

My friend has an e6600 that I bought a TRUE for lately. Yesterday, we mounted this thing, despite that fact that the TRUE had a slight bow on it, and we gave it a try.

The weird thing about it is that it appears that I can't get a reliable temp mesurement with any tool.

Running Vista x64, the BIOS reports 27C, which considering the TRUE isn't lapped to perfect would be ok, but then on Vista, the CPU temp under Nvidia Monitor and Speedfan show 38 idle, with some spikes to 50% load caused by some unknown program. However, both core values on both Speefan and Coretemp are ridiculously low, it hit something like 19 idle this morning on 0% load, with ambiant being around 20.

That's when I decided to stress test it a bit. At the stock voltage, 1.2875, small FFT Gromacs won`t raise the temps any higher than 43, and that`s only like 5-6 degrees from what I got idle.

I don't know what program to trust, all of them give me a different metric. I heard somewhere that the B2 steppings had some problems with the crystal diodes, but I`ve never seen something this borked up.

Anybody wanna help out?

I have no problems reading proper temps with my E6600 in a Windows XP environment. CoreTemp, SpeedFan, HWMonitor, and RealTemp all agree that I idle 9-10°C above ambient (19-22°C), and loads in the mid 50's. I've also got a chip with the same stock voltage (1.2875v), and at stock speeds with a lapped chip and heatsink, I idled at 2-3°C above ambient. Short of lapping both of your friend's components, how many times have you tried to reseat? How much and what kind of thermal compound did you use? Also, before lapping, try a penny/washer mod to increase the mounting pressure...

Penny mod eh? Looks interesting, however the pressure from the mounting brackets is already flexing the board a bit.

I reseated twice, and on the second time the TRUE was lapped to better flatness and way better base (liquid 1500 grit). Coretemp reports 27 C idle, not bad considering the fan setup inside his case.

Anyhow, my friend is reinstalling XP x64 soon, and the machine is currently running at 3.2 ghz at 1.32 V and looks stable. We`ll see what kind of readings he gets once he`s back on XP.

I would also suggest PC Wizard 08, along with Coretemp.
