ATI X1650 PRO AGO ... dead on purchase? Help Please :)

right well basically my mate just got a x1650 pro for his old althlon rig... and well i put it in for him, check everything and its all in correct apart from after we put ati drivers on (off ati.com). Internet explorer started crashing then just about any program we ran. I thaught it could be a driver fault or issue so we loaded the ones off the cd and that didnt solve it either.

We opened the case up and the PSU was really warm considering it hadn't been on long but i passed it off as not such a bad thing as in windows the card doesn't do anything, but we can run the system with the xp generic display drivers. we then did a format and re-installation and this didnt solve it.

one thing i can remember about putting the card in is that when i slotted it in it wouldnt reach the screw hole for the case so i had to bend/flex the back of the case towards the card, could this have damaged it at all?

Im really confused... help?
rep+ to all people that help with the problem

"Naw, I don't think that would have done anything, depends on how you flexed it, but if you did damage to anything I'm sure you would have noticed right away."

"How many Watt PSU does he have? It could be that the system isn't getting enough juice? What are the specs for his computer?"

Run Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all the old drivers. Reboot in safe mode and delete any files/folders the drivers were in (if any are still there). Then, run CCleaner's registry cleaner. Reboot and install the latest Catalyst Control Center suite. Reboot after install.

Maybe The Psu Cant Handle the Card?

The Package in my 1650 Says a at least a 300W Psu. Im Running it fine on a 250W Psu though, Maybe he Running too many things and he doesnt have enough power...

cpu-skt a amd athlon @ 2.0ghz (dont know the amd speed)
mobo-msi kt3 ultra
hdd- 1 x 80gb ide
2 cd drives
1gb of ram (1x512, 2 x 256)

his monitor pulls off the same power line going to the mobo a split 3 pin kettle lead, could this have an effect cause this really has stumped me

and the drivers i got off ati are the newest available.

im gonna try and find a old psu too test it with... i did tell him he might be pushing it but looking at his specs it isn't very power hungry.

thnx again

Try to download the drivers from the makers home page (ie http://www.sapphiretech.com/)
In some freaking way the drivers I download for AMDs home page wont work with my Sapphire x1650.

Before you try tearing apart computers and swapping out parts, did you try running Driver Cleaner Pro and CCleaner like I mentioned, before reinstalling the drivers yet?

Try using a different connector (from a different wire) for the power connection (it's a 4-pin, correct?). Otherwise, yeah, maybe try a different PSU to rule it out.

This may sound a bit odd, but I installed an X1950Pro AGP on an old rig a while back, and I could not get the drivers to work right. I did some checking and was informed I needed the Net 2.0 Framework installed on Windows for the CCC to work properly. For some reason, the computer did not have it installed. I'm not sure if it comes directly with Service Pack 2 or not. When you reinstalled Windows XP, did it come with SP2 and Net 2.0 framework? Did you install all the updates?
