Crooked Intel HSF Killed my CPU

Thread Starter

Don't know if it is a design fault with my intel stock cooler. It looked like it was installed correctly, but in fact was slightly lop sided. My CPU overheated and now it won't startup anymore.

The heatsink fan has 4 spring loaded fasteners that I fitted just like in this video:

I realised too late that only about 1/3 of the thermal pad was making contact.

Any tips for fitting this type of cooler?

Just make sure you put it on well. Im surpried it didnt cut processes before burning out....

You can always screw it on, but then you would probably only screw in one screw and have same problem.

Theres no tricks to it, you just gotta do it right.

Your CPU is not dead. Modern CPU's will switch off to save the hardware in the event of overheating. You just need to re attach the heatsink properly and you should be good to go. Failing that, RMA to Intel.

yeah. what happened was it kept cutting out about 5-10 seconds into post.

I was trying to read the screen and so switched it on 20 times in half an hour.

Then I re-seated the CPU and fitted the fan properly. I assume it is dead - I don't even get a beep. The fans go but that's it. If you know otherwise please tell me how to bring it back to life...

It should be working fine unless your not seating it right again, so RMA it.

Bloody Hell! You were right. It works. I thought I would try pluging in the ide optical drives, a sata HDD and some USB ports and it's back.

Thanks so much!

I would try clearing your CMOS. Remove the CMOS battery. Then switch the CMOS jumper to "clear" for 30 seconds or so, then switch it back. Put the battery back in. Reinstall the CPU and HSF properly. If you still aren't getting a post, you may have fried your CPU. In that case, you'll have to purchase another one, sorry.
