"New" build for my friend

Thread Starter
In 2 months iam going to be giving my best friend a better PC as I kept telling him, coulden't do it earlier because of problems in my family (moving back to my home town). He hasn't upgraded his system since early 2005 when I took him to the local PC store so its quite dated, hes currently using this:

-Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4Ghz S-478 w/Stock cooler
-768MB Value DDR RAM PC-2700 and PC-3200 are mixed
-ECS I865PE motherboard
-Generic 300W PSU 18A +12V
-40GB Samsung IDE HDD
-Sapphire 9600Pro 256MB AGP 8X w/Stock cooler
-Windows XP Pro SP2 x86

So yea its pretty old and his HDD and RAM are just about shot, nothing is overclocked except for the 1 stick of PC-2700 RAM thats at PC-3200 speed. The system hes getting from me will be the following:

-Pentium 4 630* w/AC Freezer 7 Pro
-2GB Kingston Value RAM PC-4200
-ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard
-Generic 400W PSU 18A +12V
-80GB Maxtor SATA I HDD
-Sapphire X800GTO 256MB** w/Stock cooler lapped and AS5
-Windows XP Pro SP3 x86

*Overclocked to 3.5Ghz 12 hour stable small FFT

** Overclocked to 540/594 over 400/490 stock, the RAM is rated for 600Mhz and its got the R480 core which is why it went so high stable. This card is not unlockable. Iam still amazed even today how much power this card has.

So I have told him the video card alone is at least 4-5x faster than the 9600 and the CPU is going to have over a 40% increase in performance, much faster loading from 2GB RAM and a faster HDD and hes quite excited, we can game together again I need your guys' opinion on his new setup if there is anything I missed or should consider, yes he will be getting a Core 2 CPU later this year but he doesn't know that yet I have done the following to make it as trouble free as possible:

-Lapped CPU (only 51c load)
-Lapped heatsink
-Using fresh P5W from RMA, good thing old one died before I gave it to him
-Removed stupid metal plating on the north/south bridge heatsinks for better airflow
-Replaced all the crap dried up stock TIM on motherboard heatsinks with AS5
-Lapped X800 cooler and used AS5
-Cleaned all fans of dust
-Applied vdroop mod to motherboard, working nicely
-Motherboard bios updated to latest version
-Stress tested the daylights out of it, ATI Tool test + Orthos, etc

As of now the only upgrades I have planned for it are a Core 2 CPU, probably a E2xxx. No Penryns for myself or him untill I see some changes with them, and second being a PSU at least 550W 20A+ on the +12V rail. I will not get a new video card because when I get my next HD3xxx/HD4xxx this racehorse X1900XTX Toxic will go to him. The RAM takes up to 777Mhz at stock 1.8v stable, so it should hold for a while (adding volts beyond 777Mhz does nothing).

The one thing I am concerned about is the '400W Generic PSU'. 18A on 12V isn't really enough for that rig. Otherwise, this is a very nice set of components that is easily upgradable. Honestly, the mobo is a VERY nice one, and will even handle a Q6600(!)

I seriously recommend a better PSU. Otherwise, this is a nice start. Easy to upgrade. If you have some money for him (or if he has money himself), keep an eye on the 'for sale' section. There might be a nice deal on an E2xxx series CPU or an 8800GT video card...

And seriously, get him a better PSU...

$70 before rebate, but worth every penny. 33A on a single 12V rail. Plenty power for now, and for a reasonable upgrade.

Yea the PSU will be first to upgrade, it will have a burning smell once the CPU reaches 3.75Ghz even though its stable, at 3.5Ghz the smell is gone even with the video card on load with orthos going but iam probably going to put it back to stock just for a safty margin. When I was using this CPU and my sig rig video card my other 500W PSU quit out of no where and that had 17A on the +12V rail.
