which sucks for me ... my Am2 mobo wont take any of the current phenoms , but it seems that if the chip is under 120 W i can run it , so i may be able to run a lower power X3 or such... well see, either way , i miss not having an amd machine in here

I would be doubtful that the prices will be sub $200. They will probably be in the same price range as the current chips. Remember stories a long time ago with LCDs being cheaper than CRTs? Never happened.

One thing I think will be good though is to get a good AM2+ motherboard like the M3N-HT Deluxe with the Nforce 780a chipset, pick up a 45nm AM3 chip, stick it in, and run with DDR2 1066. The price point for that setup will be significantly lower than an AM3 board with DDR3, and DDR3 really has no performance benefit over DDR2 unless it is running much higher speeds.

A setup like that would probably be able to give you more bang for the buck than an equivalently priced Intel-based system.

However, if this cannot happen for some reason, well then, I think AMD is about to shoot itself in the (other ) foot.

AM3 will be DDR3 only IIRC. And we honestly don't know just what benefit AMD might be able to derive - they do after all still pwn Intel in the memory controller department. But then again it might end up like the 2900XT DDR4 dud. We'll now when we get reliable benches.

wait, what am i thinking?!
You sir, are now on the FBI watchlist. Enjoy.

what? did you even read the article? AM2+ socket mobos can use an AM3 processor, all that changed is the mem. controller that is able to use DDR2 or DDR3, not one or the other. personally i didn't waste my money on the 9850 BE (although is was almost too tempting) b/c i knew the major upgrades, like DDR3 capability, the HD4000 series and AM3 would come out soon. it's almost as though AMD had this planned years before and just landing products in the market one month after another.

Yes, Intel has stuck with LGA775 for a long time, but that's just because the physical socket is the same. Most older LGA775 mobos probably can't run the new Wolfdales or Yorkfields. If anything it might be more confusing trying to figure out if older LGA775 mobos are compatible with the new chips or people might run the risk of damaging their mobos trying to put the new chips in. AMD, on the other hand, has at least guaranteed socket compatibilty.

Plus, with Intel going with an on-die memory controller, the days of the same socket for multiple generations is over. At least DDR4 isn't coming out anytime soon. When it does, expect a new socket, meaning new mobo as well for a new machine.

Your dream has come true. They are working lower TPB.

I knew AM2+ was a joke, thats why I didn't go for it.
By the time we get to AM3, AMD will have the HT at like 9GHz
