Frankly I hate Sony, over priced and there quality sucks!
I hate Sony for the fact that they literally own you by forcing you to buy produo memory sticks and then they make double the money. It's all marketing schemes for them. I'm not surprised Sony made a big push to eliminate HD-DVD; it was obviously in their best monopolistic interest.

You're not the brightest bulb in the fixture, eh?

If you don't like Sony products, don't buy Sony products. There's no one with a gun to your head.

Also, Blu-Ray players are made by three, soon to be six, different companies. Hell, even the discs aren't manufactured by Sony. Yes, they license the name and branding, but for christ sake, don't act like it is some kind of monopoly. It's an industry standard.

They actually probably saw this as a good time to pull out all the stops and take every loss and write-down they could find. Their goal was probably to get as close as possible to a zero profit (If not even a tax loss) as possible.

They figured since their share price was going to take a hit anyway, why not exercise every tax loss they had saved up? Don't forget that tax losses are actually a good thing for companies (I mean companies would generally rather have gains), but if you are already doomed to a bad quarter, tax losses reduce the amount of taxes you pay even more.

My point: Because they've wiped these lingering losses and write-downs off the balance sheet in a time when they are already obviously having a bad quarter, next quarter should appear extra-profitable which should go a long way in partially restoring their share price.

Good point. It's hard to imagine a 95% drop in profit considering all the other industries that Toshiba has a hand in. They make computers, TV's, hard drives, chemicals, medical devices, nuclear reactors, and are the number three semiconductor manufacturer, behind Intel and Samsung.
I can't see HD-DVD killing the business, just standard operating procedure making it look like that.

Even if it was better HD-DVD was still making money so there was no other reason for them to flip like they did.
Dude...Blu-Ray had the upper hand as far as movie studios went from the very beginning.

If it was really ALL about writing checks, maybe Toshiba should have applied some of those hundreds of millions of dollars it's made in the past year to writing those checks you're so angry about. Or maybe the DVD Forum should have lent some of the billions it made in DVD royalties from Sony and the like.

even though this thread isn't about sony just one other piece of information. blue ray isn't a sole sony product. there are something like 9 founding members of blue ray.
sony is just one of them, but they are the easiest to point the finger at because of all the anti-fanboys who want to come to a thread to bash something that is what this thread IS NOT EVEN ABOUT.

I've said this before and it is true. However, there is definitely no getting around the fact that many decisions made by the BDA had a lot to do with Sony, and it's obvious that most of the financial backing for Blu-Ray came from Sony. If the BDA is a company, Sony hardware is its flagship product.

I should have elaborated a bit more..pardon me if I sounded like a hypocrite. The reason being why I bashed on Sony for that part was because I had to buy a camera for my mom because she needed it for her work. She unfortunately doesn't have the same electronic tastes/knowledge as I do and she reluctantly wanted to go to Best Buy to buy a camera there. I really had no choice and she liked only one camera there; and unfortunately it happened to be a Sony Cybershot due to its ease of use.

Although it is a solid basic camera, the fact that Sony forces you to bend over for their memory format is easy money for them. If I could have convinced her to buy another camera and as you have said before IamtheGTIguy; I could always buy something else. Personally, I would just stay away from Sony because of the extra expenditure you have to add in. Then again it really isn't Sony fault either; its my mom lol

Blu-Ray holds more data. That's all there is to say. It is the better format, because it holds more, and costs roughly the same.
