I'm at work and I can't do much research, between the 9600gt and the 8800 gts, is the difference between the two great?

The 9600gt is great for its price, its the best bang for buck in the range... It performs almost as well as an 8800gt for alot less
The 8800GTS G92 is top of the bunch for a $210 card...No doubt about it....if you want the best performance for your money get the GTS 512mb.
On the other hand the 3870 is also a very competant card, just not quite as good as the GTS IMHO.

If you can go for an evga GTS all the better, their warranties are 2nd to none.

Get the G92 8800GTS. It is around $200 price range. Here is 8 series GPU.

well there are the driver issues ... he is using Vista and we know Nvidia's track record with that. Some Nvidia people may be able to verify how their driver's are now that they have had a couple years to figure it out.

I have had very few issues using ATI cards but Nvidia does beat their cards in terms of performance ATM. Either a 8800GT or 9600GT will serve you well, if you can find a deal on a HD3870 then it would be worth it.

8800GT 169.90 after $30 MIR

9600GT 129.99 after $35 IR & $30 MIR

Nvidia is great with vista, dunno where you got that from (can't speak for 64-bit though). I've had more driver problems with ATI than Nvidia.
