AMD ATHLON X2 6400 Black Edition...Overclock?

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
Okay, so I followed the guide on overclocking the AM2's on this site and I am having absolutely NO LUCK!

My Setup is below:
X2 BE 6400 (3.2ghz AM2)
Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 (rev. 2.0)
Ultra X-Finity 600watt PSU
Corsair XMS-2 TWIN-X PC-6400 (800mhz) 4GB RAM

I have no problem just setting my FSB to 210 x 16 and getting about 3.3ghz out of it.

I just tried putting it 214 and setting the RAM to 667mhz which would have made it 3.4ghz

I am just doing a little by little, you know?

Now when I post under this setting, the CPU beeps, then the computer makes a grinding sound out of the speaker, which I assume means something is wrong, lol, but I think its the RAM, how do I figure out what timings I can use on my RAM?

My motherboard has two settings, the first being able to change from 800mhz to 667mhz and so on, then I can leave the timings on AUTO, so doesn't it change the timings automatically to what I need for it to work?

What does "tightening" the timings mean?

I have Everest Ultimate it says my timings are 5-5-5-18 @ 400mhz and
4-4-4-13@ 270.

Should I manually try these timings, or is there a way to find the "optimal setting". Also, the goal is to keep the RAM latency low, right? Right now my latency is 47.2ms and I am running bone stock with no OC.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, I have looked everywhere for this CPU and nobody is using this thing, maybe because it came out so close to the Phenoms? I bought mine yesterday, instead of buying a Phenom, they are just too new, plus late in 2008 45n chips are coming out, so I will wait for that.

Thanks in advance!
LL

Set the ram to 667 and the timings to 5-5-5-18 then you will probably have to up the voltage on the ram and cpu. What are the voltages at for the ram and cpu?

CPU = 1.44v
RAM = 1.94v

But my RAM is 800mhz, and the timings are 5-5-5-18, so I should set it to 667mhz and the timings 5-5-5-18?

Yeah, when you raise the fsb the ram speed will go up. Raise the cpu voltage to 1.5 and the ram voltage to 2.1 or 2.2 if your motherboard allows it.

Bludshot is right. I had the same mem, processor, and mb setup you have and was able to get 3.5 out of mine. ram-2.1 proc-1.5 I also upped the northbridge a bit. Don't change the ram from 800 to 667 it will be fine.

Okay, Kenny, please, please Help me out, since we have the same setup, so what you are saying is up my CPU to 1.5v put the ram at 2.1v and how do I up the northbridge? also, can you tell me exactly what my FSB has to be to get 3.5ghz out of it? or do I do 3550 / 16 since I am leaving the multiplier alone, correct?

So, here is what my setup should look like....
Leave ram at 800mhz Keep Timings to 5-5-5-18
up ram voltage to 2.1
up cpu voltage to 1.5
change fsb to 222

PS Kenny. I have the Black Edition, is that what you have? I gave rep to everyone who has responded to this.

If you don't have the Black Edition, does that mean I can OC more than you?

Just a little tid-bit, having 4 sticks of ram can hold back the OC since the memory controller has to work more.

One more thing, do I need to disable cool and quiet and fan speed controls and stuff? I just upped my voltage a tad, and I saw it spike to 1.59 for a brief second....Should these features be turned off at BIOS?
