EVGA 750i FTW Overclock Thread - Page 289

Thanks, I might try tweaking again. I don't really understand the FTW GTL settings compared to the Gigabyte boards I've used. I just wanted an idea of the range people are in.

First time posting. I just made an account because I wanted to say thank you to everyone here for the time spent on this thread. The information here has really helped me tweak my Q6600 I just got. So thanks to everyone here who has contributed. Great website, great work.

Also from me, thanks to all who left their knowledge on this thread for what, 3 years? I have read every single page. I too have a 750i FTW, as a side project. I started trying to overclock it on an e8400 last December. Never put a real effort into it, just ran it at 3.6Ghz I think. In July I found a cheap q9450. So I took a particular quad that already firghts overcloking 15-20% and brought it kicking and screaming to this very very picky and finicky motherboard. At least it was a good motherboard to learn how to really overclock on, because everything has to be dialed in!

For months I could not get it beyonf 3.1Ghz stable. Just for my own satisfaction, I was bound and determined to reach the arbitrary (in my mind) 1600 QDR. Finally, last week I did it. I'm at 3200Mhz, with 4x2 Mushkin Blacklines at 800Mhz (unlinked) at 1:1. Vcore is 1.332, FSB 1.3, SPP 1.4, NF200 1.25 (I believe, but I am at work). Temps at idle are 40 to 44, varying amongst all four cores, with max temps at full load between 55 and 58. The key was going into the red in the settings in BIOS to set the FSB at 1.3. Before, It would not boot at 1600. It also had the added benefit of allowing me to lower my vcore from 1.35, which is dangerously close to the 45nm max.

Anyway, not a great overclock (I'm more proud of it than the e8400 3.6), but a great, stable success with 8Gb of RAM, and it's thanks to all the knowledge left here!

Actually....referencing above, all is NOT well. In fact, overclocking this motherboard and this dog cpu (Q9450) produces ALOT of heat, LOL...yeah can feel great amounts of heat exiting, and it warms up the room noticeable...in a room set at 71 deg F.

Tried it out with Shogun 2 Total War. All fans, GPU, system, CPU, all detect enough heat at full throttle that they are all maxed. It has locked up a couple times after a couple hours of memory, and then I got a BSOD last night. From what I could tell on the dump file, it was driver or hardware related. That's not very helpful. Anyway, temps cool back town from low 60's after to an idle of between 48 and 53. That's way too hot, and I'm wondering if heat might be the issue.

It's possible the PC ran out of memory for the game, which I have encountered on several other games as well (COH, Fallout:New Vegas, and Empire Total War). It's also possible, and I think more likely, that either the CPU cooler isn't up to the task (Zalman CNPS 9800AT), or I've had to put too many volts into the SPP or the FSB. FSB is 1.35, and SPP (NB) is 1.45 I think. Also I had lowered the vcore so that in windows it reads 1.32 now.....perhaps I should up that? Can too many volts to either FSB or Northbridge be causing this?

Again, problem is not often, and so far it's only been unstable in that one game. 4 hours of Prime 95 were fine. Finally, should I go ahead and replace the cpu heatsink? I was thinking the Dark Knight II. At the very least, even if theres better ones, it should cool alot better.

Thanks In Advance!

Final Thought: I know this board likes the e8400. If I clocked that way up instead of the q9450 (with alot less effort), would it still play games pretty well (GTX480 GPU)? My son uses it for gaming and internet, little else. But there ARE more and more games using 4 cores, which will cripple the e8400.
