How to: Use custom skins with Counter Strike:Source?

This simple guide will show you how to install custom weapon skins and sounds for Counter Strike:Source. If you really want a detailed look at player and other skins I'll do it, but once you've read this you should be able to work it out for yourself.

First, the basic rule: If you can't find a file where I say its supposed to be - create it!

The skin I shall use as my guinea pig is the Ankthor USP

The skin is downloaded as a .rar file, and you'll need WinRAR to access it. There is a trial version available so you don't have to pay anything.

When you first open the file with WinRAR you will see this:

(Don't ask why I have a german version of WinRAR...)

The material, model, script and sound folders correspond to files in the cstrike folder already on your computer. Lets find those files now.

They are located in whatever drive you installed Steam into (the default is C

C:\\Program Files\\Valve\\Steam\\SteamApps\\*YOUR STEAM USERNAME*\\counter-strike source\\cstrike

You should see a 'Materials' and a 'Sound' folder straight away, you may or may not see 'Models' or 'Scripts'. If you can't see any of these four files, then make them by right clicking anywhere in the white space and going to New > Folder.

You can clearly see the files in my cstrike folder. Scripts is there, just futher down. Note: Ignore the path to my file, I installed it in a funny place.

We shall deal with 'Materials' first. Open the 'Materials' folder in the cstrike file, look for 'Models', if you see it, open it. If you don't see it, create it. Now in the 'Models' folder, you will see/need a 'Weapons' folder, again, open or create depending on whether you see it or not. In the 'Weapons' folder you will need a 'v_models' folder. Once more, open or create. By now you should look something like this:

C:\\Program Files\\Valve\\Steam\\SteamApps\\*YOUR STEAM USERNAME*\\counter-strike source\\cstrike\\materials\\models\\weapons\\v_mod els

Now, we go back to the .rar file containg the skin. You see the 'materials' folder? Double click it. See 'models'? Double click it. See 'weapons'? Double click it! Anything familiar? Yes, this is the structure you have just created in the cstrike folder. Open the last folder, 'v_weapons', and you will see 'pist_usp'.Highlight and drag or copy and paste this folder into your cstrike\\materials\\models\\weapons\\v_models folder that you just made/found.

Now we move onto 'Models'. Go back out into you main cstrike folder and open the folder 'Models'. In here you will need just one folder, called 'Weapons'. Create it or open it, just like before.

Now go back to the .rar file. Double click 'models', double click 'weapons'. You will see a whole list of v_pist and w_pist files. All of these need to be in your cstrike\\models\\weapons folder. Highlight and drag or copy and paste them all into this file. Thats 'model' done, now for sound.

Back into the main cstrike folder once more, and open up the 'Sound' folder. Here you will need just one file once more called 'Weapons'. Open up the .rar file once again and double click on 'sound', double click 'weapons' and there you see 'usp'. That 'usp' folder needs to be in the cstrike\\sound\\weapons folder you have open, drag it over or copy and paste again.

Almost done, its onto the final file now - 'Scripts'. In your cstrike folder, open up 'Scripts' and create/open a folder called 'Weapons'. Bring the .rar file back up and double click 'scripts', and you will see the 'weapons' file and a .txt document called 'game_sounds_manifest'. Copy or drag that .txt file into cstrike\\scripts - NOT into the 'Weapons' sub-folder. Now in the .rar file double click on the 'weapons' folder, and put the .txt file 'usp' into cstrike\\scripts\\weapons.

Thats it! All done and installed, CS will autmatically recognise the file additions and override the default skins with the ones you just installed. To remove any skins, just reverse engineer your actions, deleting the files you added for that particular skin.

Notes:

- Folders (eg. 'cstrike\\sounds\\weapons') are not case sensitive
- Sometimes folders won't be labeled 'pist_usp' or 'rif_m4', they will be called some custom name. They will still work, and the directory leading up to them is the same as always, so its not hard to figure out where they go.
- When naming files, ignore the ' ' I have around them. Windows won't let you use those characters in a file name anyway...

EDIT: Model Consitency

Valve, in all its wisdom, introduced a new toy recently that enforces the default models/skins ( see Steam News 10/08/05). This is server based, and the admin can choose whether to enforce it or not. You cannot play on a server with consistency on when you have custom weapon models installed - player models etc are fine.

To get around the problem you can do two things:

1) Move the 'cstrike/models/weapons' folder to another file while you play a server with consitency on. It means you will be on default models, but at least you can play. The same applies to if you want to play with bots offline.
2) Play on a server where the admin isn't an asshat.
OR
2a) Have babies with said asshat to coax them into turning it off.

Does the Overclock.Net server allow these skins? Could I make the terrorists bright red or something, I always have trouble telling the counter terrorists and the terrorists apart..

I think the overclock.net server allows custom skins still...but not many player skins work anymore because Valve messed up the models :/

Try these:
