Puppy, DSL (Damn Small)... Minimal installs of Suse, possibly?

Those distros aren't very nice, though, if you ask me.

You can install Xbuntu with only 128mb ram, here's how:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=204161

Xbuntu is your best bet, it is easier to use & not as minimalist as DSL.

Agreed. Sabayon was kinda hard to use, though.

the spare rigs specs are:

P4 1.5ghz
128mb of pc800 ram
20gb hd
G45 matrox GPU
Go with Ubuntu 8.04 or 7.10. They are the best for new members to the Linux community. Ubuntu to me feels a bit like old school Mac OS X.

I like arch for older boxes. But it's not user-friendly at all. Straight up gentoo? It's not TERRIBLY bad...

if you've never used linux before, I would not recommend slackware to start with. If you'd like to get your feet a little wet with a linux OS, Ubuntu (xubuntu, for your hardware) is a better match for your needs imo

luckily, most of what you learn aside from different package managers is portable from distro to distro, so you can always step up to slackware like all those c00l power us3rs

Arch can't run on really old machines b/c its for i686 architectures. But it'll work for his P4.

slackware
Minimal requirements:
Processor i486
RAM 32 MB
Disk Space 1GB
Media Drive 4x CD-ROM
and you can install Xfce from it.
